Natural Remedies For Depression

Millions of people around the world are now interested in natural remedies for depression. To date, depression and anxiety remain one of the most undiagnosed disorders amongst various diseases. In the United states, more than 9 million people suffer from depression and many of them have been struggling with it since years. Therefore, it is not hard to see why so many of them are somewhat skeptical of natural cures.

If you are suffering from depression, then taking conventional anti-depressants will not be the best option because it comes with several side effects. In the last few years, many natural herbal remedies for depression have been very successful in alleviating depression symptoms, so taking them for depression is definitely a credible alternative.

Some of the most effective natural depression remedies include essential oils, antidepressant herbs, a few vitamins, yoga, physical exercises and mineral supplements.

1. Herbal tinctures - Herbs are very effective in treating depression when taken as tincture. You can get herbal tinctures of rose, oats, St John's Wort, or vervain, as they are quite effective for mild depression. These tinctures are easily available in many herbal shops. Alternatively, you can also make your own.

You should take about 2-3ml of the chosen tincture by diluting it in water, at least 3-4 times in a day. You should avoid direct sunlight when taking St John's wort. When taking some other medication, it is better if you consult a specialist before taking a tincture.

2. Yoga - You can treat your depression naturally with yoga because it helps in stimulating the Vegas nerve. This helps in altering your mood in a positive way. In fact, meditation is the main aspect of yoga and helps in altering the consciousness. Due to this, you will feel much more relaxed when doing your day-to-day activities.

Other relaxation therapies that can help you are guided imagery and music therapy, which provides relaxation to your mind and body, thereby treating depression.

3. Essential oils - Various essential oil mixes that have been formulated specifically for depression can also be used as a massage oil or can be applied on the space between upper lip and nose. You should never apply essential oils directly on your skin. It is best to mix the essential oils with a carrier or base oil.

For instance, you can mix 10 drops of geranium, 10 drops of lavender, 15 drops of bergamot in three tablespoons of some base oil such as grapeseed, sweet almond, avocado, and apricot kernel. For chronic cases, 4 drops of osmanthus oil and 5 drops of jasmine oil will bring instant relief.

Any of the above mixes can also be used in a bath. You can sprinkle your preferred mix in water and disperse the essential oils. Soak in the bath for about 30 minutes.

These oils can also be poured on handkerchief or tissue for sniffing or can also be used in a vaporizer. You can use few drops of each oil for this purpose.

4. Exercise - This is one of the best and simplest natural remedies for anxiety and depression. You can counter depression with some vigorous exercises. Such exercises increase your heart rate and boost the natural mood enhancers in your body. There is no need to spend hours every day in a gym, as only three to four hours a week is sufficient to get the desired results.

Exercises done in peaceful natural surroundings can get you much better results than in a gym or a room. In fact, gardening is the the best activity of this sort.

5. Vitamins and minerals - All those who suffer from depression mostly have low level of vitamin B in their body. Therefore, eating a healthy diet and taking supplements that have significant amounts of vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid can easily correct all your deficiencies. You can improve your mood by taking vitamin D with some supplements or about 80mg of selenium every day

Aside from that, you should also take sufficient quantities of iron because its deficiency can make your depression worse. You can get your iron levels checked by a health professional. You should also balance your fats. Mostly, depressed people have very low omega-3 fatty acid levels, and any increase in the intake of essential fish oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids can go a long way in fighting off depression.

Though depression is a highly complex disease, it can be cured by reducing its symptoms with the help of natural remedies for depression as discussed above. With some research, you can find many more natural remedies to get rid of your depression in an easy way.
