Northern Mich. University Tuition Up 3.75 Percent

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - Northern Michigan University's trustees have boosted tuition and fees by 3.75 percent for the 2013-14 academic year.

The board approved the increase Friday. The annual cost for full-time resident undergraduates will be $9,094. That's up $328 from last year's rate of $8,766.

Vice President for Finance Gavin Leach says the university in Marquette also will increase financial aid by 6.6 percent, which will offset about one-third of the bump.

Northern Michigan says it remains within the tuition restraint level required to secure its full 2.1 percent state appropriation increase under a higher education bill approved by the Legislature in June.

Trustee Steven Mitchell says he regrets the higher rate and acknowledges it will be a hardship for some students. But he adds they're getting a good return on their investment.
