Thousands of Kuwaitis protest electoral law move

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Thousands of Kuwaitis took part in a rally late on Monday to protest any changes to the electoral law which they said could harm the prospects of opposition lawmakers in upcoming elections.

While the major oil exporter has not experienced the kind of mass popular uprisings that have swept the Arab region since last year, tensions have grown between the cabinet, opposition lawmakers and youth activists.

Around 3,000 people, mainly men in traditional Kuwaiti dress, gathered opposite parliament at Erada Square, the scene of several anti-government protests including one in November when protesters stormed the chamber.

At the height of frequent demonstrations last year, tens of thousands of youth activists, opposition MPs and their followers took part in such rallies in the regional U.S. ally.

The government asked the country's top court earlier this month to rule on a law that divides Kuwait into five constituencies, saying this was necessary to protect against legal challenges to future elections.

Some opposition politicians and activists have accused the government of wanting to alter electoral districts to prevent another opposition majority in the next parliamentary election.

Kuwait changed its election law in 2006, reducing the number of constituencies to five from 25 as part of efforts to reduce the possibility vote-buying and to cut tribal influence at the polls. Political parties are banned so lawmakers rely on forming blocs in parliament with tribal ties playing a major role.

The infighting has held up legislation and investment in the OPEC member state which has seen eight governments come and go in just six years.

"The government has been trying to break this opposition but it can't stop it now," economic consultant Anwar al-Sharhan said at the rally, where there was a minimal police presence.

"The government didn't have any other options so it went for the judicial system. This is the worst thing that could happen."

COURT RULING

Sharhan said Kuwaitis were tired of the political deadlock and felt the country's massive oil wealth was being squandered.

"We can't build a proper airport, we can't build a proper port, we can't even build proper roads," he said, as men sat under palm trees on carpets in the 45C (113 F) heat.

Speakers on Monday also criticized a court ruling from earlier this year that effectively dissolved a parliament dominated by opposition lawmakers and reinstated the previous, more government-friendly, assembly.

The reinstated parliament, originally elected in 2009, has been unable to meet to swear in the new government. Protesters held signs reading "Out with the 2009 assembly".

Around 4,000 Kuwaitis protested in June against the court ruling, calling it a coup against the constitution.

"We need more justice. Democracy is not complete in Kuwait," poet Faisal al-Hamlan said after addressing the audience.

Since they were elected in February, opposition lawmakers sought to grill senior cabinet members in parliament, forcing the resignation of two.

Kuwait, with its elected legislature and lively political debate, stands out in a region governed by autocrats who tolerate little dissent. However the al-Sabah family still holds a firm grip on state affairs.

The most important cabinet posts are held by al-Sabah family members and the 83-year-old emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who has the last say in politics, reserves the right to dissolve parliament at will.

He is widely expected to do this and call new elections by the end of the year in an attempt to break the deadlock.

Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men: Healthy micronutrient intake linked to reduced DNA fragmentation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

Anti-Obama doc highlights weak Hollywood newcomers

(AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.

Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.

The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.

The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.

The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.

The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.

But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."

"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."

"Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.

That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.

"Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.

The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.

D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.

"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."

Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.

In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Expendables 2," $13.5 million ($18.5 million international).

Lesotho rugby federation launched | Sunday Express

Mikia Kalati

MASERU ? Rugby will be a success in Lesotho.
That was the message from the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR), during yesterday?s official launch of the rugby association in Lesotho.
The federation was recently recognised as an affiliate member of the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC).
Speaking at the launch held at Lesotho High School grounds, the federation?s vice-president, Fetang Selialia, told the Sunday Express that the turn-out from both youngsters and those who have already been involved in the sport was impressive.
?I never expected people to come in such big numbers, it really shows that we started on a high note and the future is bright for rugby hopefuls,? he said.
?The establishment of the Maseru Kings, the local rugby team that has been competing in the Eastern Free State leagues, has led the way for rugby fanatics in this country and we want to see the sport growing even bigger in the coming months,? Selialia said.
He said more focus will be on developing youngsters under the age of 18, after introducing the youth development programme on the same day.
Selialia added: ?At the moment facilities remain a challenge but the Minister of Sports, Ntate Thesele Maseribane, is keen to help us grow the sport. He had a meeting with us and has promised to help put the needed structures in place.?
Teams from South Africa also graced the celebrations, while Selialia said the members of the Botswana rugby association who attended the event came to give a helping hand to their Lesotho counterparts.
He applauded the support from the corporate sector and noted that telecommunication giant, Econet-Telecom-Lesotho and Castle Lager have played a big part in helping improve rugby.

Stock Market Advice That Can Benefit You

Stock Market Advice That Can Benefit You

Posted on August 26, 2012 by William Tan in The Smart Investor

The stock market is a very tricky business, even for the most experienced investors. Although you have potential of making some money, you could experience misfortunes that set you back. By following the advice in this article, you will be able to invest your money wisely, and see a profit in the long run.

If you?re an American citizen you can open your own Roth IRA and fill it up. Most middle-class wage earners qualify to open this type of account. This type of investment has so many benefits and tax breaks that even if there is a medium level return, it can generate a large yield.

Projected Return

In order to make your stock market investments the most successful, you need to map out a specific plan with strategies and future goals. This plan needs to have things such as different strategies to use when buying and selling certain stocks. It should also entail a precise budget which defines your investment limitations. This will help you to make prudent choices, instead of being rash and relying on your emotions.

If you are using stock analysis to consider new investments, one of the first areas you need to consider in your analysis is the PE ratio, along with the total projected return on the stock. The price/earnings ratio should be no more than twice the value of the projected return. So, if you think that a stock will have a return of 11% you should have a price to earnings rate of 22 or less.

Buying a stock is also buying ownership in a company. Remember, when you purchase a stock then you are basically purchasing part of a company. You have to do thorough research to ensure the choices you make are sound and your investment will succeed.

Do not overlook investing in international stocks. While your preference might be towards investing in US companies and stocks, another way is to invest in the global economy by choosing to invest in companies around the world. Expanding your portfolio by investing in a mutual fund with international stocks in it is a great way to begin globalizing if you feel unsure about your current level of international expertise.

Look for a familiar industry to invest in. You are better able to understand the inner workings of companies whose industries you are familiar with and thus, you are better able to determine which ones are worth investing in. Success in any industry is not likely if you are not educated in it and are not sure what to expect or how to operate.

Make sure you diversify your investments sufficiently. Just like the saying, it is wise to not have all of your eggs inside of one, single basket. You have to hedge your bets, as they say in the market, by investing in various solid stock opportunities.

Consider signing up for an online investing message board. You will benefit from interacting with other traders. These investors can help you and you can help them. By joining good forums that are frequented by experienced investors, you might pick up good information that cannot be found anywhere else.

Voting Rights

Make sure you consider a wide variety of investment options. It is always a good idea to pick stocks that will grow in the future, but also look at the growth prospects of bigger and safer companies. The bigger companies are known for high growth, so they are more likely to continue having profits and performing well.

Use your voting rights if you own some common stocks. Depending upon a particular company?s charter, you might be entitled to voting rights when electing proposals or directors in major changes like mergers. A lot of voting occurs annually at any given company?s shareholders? meeting; it can also be done through proxy voting.

If you want to invest in a particular stock, pay attention to the quantity of shares which are traded each day. This is just as important as the commission you pay for selling when investing in stock. When a stock?s volume is low then you don?t get as much for trading that stock. This means that it can be hard to sell it if you want to get out.

There are, as was mentioned earlier, a lot of ways to protect your stock market investments. Instead of making huge mistakes with your money, implement what you?ve just learned and see a profit instead.

Stocks are more than a piece of paper that is bought and sold. Stock ownership means that you?re a part of the company?s ownership as well. You are then entitled to both claims and earnings on assets. Voting privileges are sometimes granted by stock ownership.

Bernanke says Fed has scope to provide more stimulus

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve has room to deliver additional monetary stimulus to boost the U.S. economy, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told a Congressional oversight panel in a letter.

"There is scope for further action by the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions and strengthen the recovery," Bernanke wrote to the committee's chairman, Representative Darrell Issa, in a letter obtained by Reuters on Friday.

Bernanke at the end of next week will give a closely watched speech at an annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which will be closely watched for clues into the prospect of further bond-buying from the Fed.

Asked if it was too soon to consider new monetary easing steps when the Fed's Operation Twist program aimed at lowering long-term bond yields was still in effect, Bernanke said policymakers must invariably look beyond the immediate term.

"Because monetary policy actions operate with a lag, the stance of policy must necessarily be set in light of a forecast of future performance of the economy," Bernanke said.

Fed officials sharply revised down their forecasts for U.S. economic growth in June, and another potential round of downward revisions could come at its September meeting.

U.S. gross domestic product expanded at an annual rate of 1.5 percent in the second quarter, a level seen too weak to lead to a sustained decline in unemployment, which rose to 8.3 percent in July.

In response to the financial crisis and recession of 2008-2009, the Fed cut rates to effectively zero and bought some $2.3 trillion in mortgage and Treasury bonds to put downward pressure on long-term borrowing costs.

Taking Your Business To The Next Level With Internet Marketing ...

August 22nd, 2012 // 5:23 pm @ Darrell Hemphill

Some people shy away from internet marketing because they don?t feel as if they have a product idea good enough to make it in business. Well, as you will eventually find out, it?s not always about the product. There are many ways you can make good money from internet marketing, and we?ll go over a few in this article.

A unique and eye-catching ad will always succeed better than something you copied from someone?s website. People are constantly bombarded by advertising online and you need to stand out from the crowd. A simple, honest ad can often be just as effective as a flashy one that?s full of empty promises.

Your advertising should always stick out when you are posting on classified websites. Classifieds can be cluttered since most services are free, so making yourself stand out is a challenge. Text symbols or additional spaces can help draw visual attention to your headline. You can also emphasize the value of your product succinctly.

Be honest about the product. Your readers are not stupid. If you know of a product that has a flaw in it, but would still like to promote that product, tell your audience. Make sure you explain the difficulty you had, and why you still enjoy the product. Your customers will appreciate your honesty.

If you sell products to celebrities or people who are famous in a certain community, get their permission to list their names on your website. Post a list of your most valued customers for everyone to see. People who like these celebrities will want to buy the same products and should trust you right away.

Heavily advertise the word ?free? on your website. Many people are motivated to buy something when they receive free products. You could offer a free accessory with each purchase or have a free download available on your site. This will increase interest in your product and encourage customers to make a purchase.

Link to other sites in exchange for a link to yours. If you sell socks, consider linking to a site that sells shoes and get them to reciprocate. You will increase your business and theirs, while at the same time provide an easy and useful tool to your customers. It is a win win for everyone.

Build in rewards for good customers. For example, if someone spends a large amount of money, give them a discount on their overall purchase. You could also give them money off of their next purchase as well to encourage them to come back. This will make your customers feel like you care about them and want them to return.

As you can see, there are many things that you can do to give your internet business a boost. It will take time, effort, and some trial and error. However, if you keeping learning about internet marketing techniques and applying what you have learned, like what you have learned from here, you will achieve the success that you are looking for.

Northshore 2012 prep football preview

, August 23, 2012 3 a.m.

Marshall Wadleigh gives Northshore a true threat at running back. - (Grant Therkildsen / The Times-Picayune)

Northshore running back Marshall Wadleigh is the first to admit that sometimes the praise others heap on him can be a bit much.

After all, when you?re high school senior and your coach says, ?Marshall Wadleigh is one of the best human beings I?ve ever been around,? and one of your teammates says, ?Honestly, he?s the most perfect kid I?ve ever been around,? that?s a lot to try to live up too.

?People are always puffing me up, but I have some flaws,? said Wadleigh, who besides being the focus of the Panthers? offense, is a two-year team captain, student body treasurer and Ivy League-bound valedictorian candidate. ?I definitely have some flaws.?

To be sure, there are reports Wadleigh doesn?t make up his bed too well and he might not always eat his peas, but otherwise?.

?His character is flawless,? said Northshore Coach Mike Bourg. ?He set the bar so high and then leads by example on and off the field.

?He?s a pure football player who makes a team better just by being on it.?

It just so happens that making his team better is Wadleigh?s top priority.

The Panthers have been 2-8, 2-8 and 4-6 during his time at Northshore, although last year?s campaign did feature a sweep of city rivals Salmen and Slidell.?

?Northshore never really scares anybody,? Wadleigh said. ?But that?s going to change this year.

?We?re going to be a force to be reckoned with.?

That remains to be seen, but Wadleigh says he feels the Panthers are a much-matured and more-talented team than in recent years.

?We?ve got some guys who may not have played much, but they?ve showed what they?re made of this summer,? he said. ?We?re going to be ready to go.?

Bourg certainly hopes Wadleigh is ready to go. He plans to put the ball in his hands 25 times per game as a tailback in the Panthers? pistol offense.

The idea is that will set up play-action opportunities for strong-armed junior quarterback Dalvin Populist.

?Twenty-five times a game sounds good to me,? said Wadleigh, who averaged 13.7 carries per-game last year, gaining 804 yards, although he scored only four touchdowns. ?When you get the ball that much, you really feel like you can control the game.

?My goals are to gain between 1,500 and 2,000 yards and get a bunch of scores. But mostly I want to win.?

Wadleigh will have a good-sized line to run behind, led by 6-foot-5, 270-pound senior tackle Zac Collins.

The defense has only four returning starters, led by senior free safety Nick Houston and senior linebacker Gary Impastato. But Bourg is looking for a much-improved front seven that includes tackle Michael Chatman, who missed most of last season with a broken leg, and junior linebacker Brandon Ballard.

?It?s been a gradual progression since spring,? Houston said. ?But we?ve got a lot of guys who are playing with intensity and are really ready to step up.

?Everybody?s mentally grasping stuff the first time and you?re going to see 11 players getting to the ball.?

All of that has Bourg feeling good about his team in his sixth season at Northshore.

?We?ve still got a lot of growing up to do on the field and our schedule is one of the toughest in the state,? he said ?But I?m as optimistic as I?ve been.?

Certainly there are no questions about Wadleigh. A 5-10, 190-pounder with a 37-inch vertical leap and 4.5 40, he?s an effective downhill runner, which the Panthers? offense needs, and also a capable return man, as his selection to the All-District 6-5A team at that position last year demonstrates.

But it?s the intangibles which Bourg praises.

?You never hear a cuss word out of Marshall?s mouth and you never hear anybody saw anything about him,? he said. ?He?s got this little corner of the locker room where he sits and studies his playbook before practices and I can?t remember ever having to get on to him about anything.

?I know I talk about him like he?s my own kid, but I wouldn?t talk about my kids that way. He?s really the kind of kid you?d like your daughter to marry.?

A straight-A student who is active in the Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wadleigh, who was a starting left fielder on the Northshore baseball team, said he would be involved in even more activities were it not for football.

Wadleigh?s playing career isn?t likely to end with high school. He toured Penn, Dartmouth and Harvard this summer and all have shown interest. He is undecided between majoring in engineering or business.

But first, there?s the upcoming season in which Wadleigh?s leadership will be as vital as what he accomplishes as a ball carrier.?

??It?s a lot of responsibility when you know you have people looking up to you,? he said. ?I try to set the best example by showing them if you do the right things you can have success in your studies and in football.?

But, Wadleigh adds, he is not one to get on to his teammates.

?I try to be more a behind-the-scenes leader,? he said.?

?What I tell the others is, ?Look, this is what we need out of you? and usually they respond.?

Akin cares little about pressure from GOP leaders

(AP) ? Until this week, Rep. Todd Akin was virtually unknown beyond his suburban district, associated more with his deep religious convictions than any legislative achievements.

Long before his comments about women's bodies and "legitimate rape" made him a potential flashpoint in the fall campaign, Akin was a favorite among home-schooling organizations and conservative church groups in the area where his relatives have lived for generations. He seldom authored bills or sought wider recognition.

Now Akin could help shape the national political debate in a Senate race that leaders of his own party figure he can't win, and they're worried he'll drag down other Republicans with him. But if Akin's 12 years in Congress have proven anything, it's that pressure from the party establishment carries little weight with him.

"He's never been popular among Republicans, and Todd Akin doesn't care," Saint Louis University political science professor Ken Warren said. "The best you can say for Todd is that he's a very principled guy. He believes what he believes, and he's not going to compromise those principles just to be in the mainstream."

The 65-year-old, six-term congressman ascended in Missouri politics largely on his own. He grew up on a farm outside St. Louis, earned an engineering degree and went to work at now-bankrupt Laclede Steel Co., which his great-grandfather started. He and his wife, Lulli, settled on land in St. Louis County owned by Akin's father. Each Independence Day he would dress in colonial attire as the family hosted a party for the neighborhood.

The Akins home-schooled their four sons (three of whom graduated from the Naval Academy and became Marine Corps officers) and two daughters. Lulli Akin's involvement in home-schooling groups helped create the base of support that has long sustained her husband's political career.

Akin, a member of the conservative Presbyterian Church in America, earned a master's of divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis in 1984. He never became a pastor but four years later won a seat in the Missouri House, where he established a track record as a staunch abortion opponent and supporter of gun rights.

Faith is never far from his mind. In a fundraising email sent to supporters Wednesday, Akin said he was accountable only to God and the voters, not "party bosses."

His anti-establishment streak started with his first run for Congress. In 2000, party elders favored Gene McNary, a former St. Louis County executive who served in the George H.W. Bush administration and ran previously for governor and senator.

Despite being an underdog, Akin defeated McNary by 56 votes on a day when drenching rain kept turnout at 17 percent.

Akin's disregard for the advice of party elites can be seen throughout his congressional tenure.

While debating Bush's Medicare prescription drug benefit in 2003, House leaders assiduously courted rank-and-file members to vote for the legislation. Akin refused, saying the program would blow up the federal budget and attract more illegal immigrants.

He also voted against Bush's No Child Left Behind education package. And in 2008, Akin waited months after Sen. John McCain had secured the Republican presidential nomination before endorsing him, citing concerns about McCain's views on embryonic-stem-cell research among other issues.

In Congress, Akin has been something of a backbencher. He authored the Protect the Pledge Act in 2006 that sought to ensure the phrase "under God" was maintained when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The bill did not pass in the Senate.

But he is well known in Washington for his spirited pursuit of legislation on social issues, even in cases where it stands no chance of becoming law. Akin has sponsored or co-sponsored a raft of legislation affecting abortion, including a proposal that would ban all federal funding for abortions. He has also sought to require parental consent for minors who want birth control.

His efforts have won him the support of conservative groups such as the Family Research Council, which was one of few organizations to stand by him after the rape remarks.

Akin was always something of an outsider in the House Republican caucus. He has relatively few friends in the caucus and tends to eschew House social gatherings. Inside the Capitol, Akin is considered amiable, if removed. He is generally friendly and cordial with individual members, including Democrats.

An Army veteran with a son who served as a Marine in Iraq, Akin serves on the Armed Services Committee and is chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. He lobbied for an appointment to the House budget committee and was appointed after Republicans retook the majority. He also serves on the Science and Technology Committee.

Akin, one of the first members of Congress to join the tea party caucus, has generated backlash before.

In June 2011, a group of St. Louis-area religious leaders condemned his comments that liberalism "really is a hatred for God." He drew fire again in recent weeks for comparing federal student loans to "a stage three cancer."

Some considered Akin an underdog again in a three-way primary race for the Senate, but he dominated in the most conservative areas of Missouri and handily defeated millionaire businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Polls showed he had a good chance of unseating incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in November ? a race crucial to Republican efforts to retake the Senate.

Everything changed Sunday. In an interview with St. Louis TV station KTVI, Akin said he understood that conception from rape was rare.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said. He has since apologized many times over.

But fellow Republicans, including presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have turned on Akin, calling for him to get out of the race. In addition to concern that he has forfeited any chance of winning in Missouri, there was growing worry that the fallout could hurt other congressional candidates and even Romney.

Republicans trying to force him out face a formidable challenge.

Akin has proclaimed that his success comes from not paying attention to politics. His campaign isn't run by a political operative but by his eldest son, Perry.

His unwavering opposition to abortion, support for prayer in school and gun rights and disdain for big government have attracted a solid base of support in an increasingly conservative state.

"One thing that has drawn me to Todd is his faith," said Don Hinkle, director of public policy for the Missouri Baptist Convention.

State Rep. Dwight Scharnhorst, a St. Louis County Republican, said "of all the people in Washington, D.C., if I had to rate one person that I would trust holding my wallet or keeping my grandchildren over the weekend, Todd Akin would be at the top of the list."

Another Republican state representative, Bill White of Joplin, described Akin as different from many elected officials who change their stance on issues based on the whims of voters or pressure from political elites.

"Money, power, position," White said. "My assessment is those things are not going to register with him."

HTC One V makes the leap to Cricket's lineup September 2nd for $270

HTC One V makes the leap to Cricket's lineup September 2nd for $270

The One line hasn't seen much carrier love lately, but that's all set to change next month. Beginning September 2nd, the littlest member of that smartphone troupe -- the One V -- will be hitting Cricket's lineup at $270, no contract necessary, and notching two milestones in the process. Aside from offering subscribers a belated first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, the Sense-skinned 3.7-incher's release also counts as HTC's official hardware debut on the network. In case you've forgotten and need a bit of a spec refresher, the odd-lipped Legend throwback bucks the de rigeur multi-core trend for a single 1GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU running Android 4.0, a 5-megapixel rear camera powered by ImageSense tech and, for better or worse, features Beats Audio integration. It's no heavyweight as current smartphones go, but if you're keen to push things forward, this lil' fella packs a considerable punch. Check out the company's official presser after the break.

UPDATE: KeyBanc Capital Markets Downgrades Group 1 - Benzinga

In a report published Wednesday, KeyBanc Capital Markets downgraded its rating on Group 1 Automotive (NYSE: GPI) from Buy to Hold, and removed its price target which was previously $63.00.

KeyBanc noted, ?We are downgrading our rating for Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (GPI-NYSE) to a HOLD from a BUY and believe the shares are fairly valued at this time for the following reasons: 1) the outlook for the robust growth we anticipated from an aggressive pace of well-executed, disciplined acquisitions has softened near term, and we believe the increased uncertainty of the macro outlook is the likely driver, which could persist post Presidential elections and into 2013; 2) earnings upside is likely limited as GPI's potential to outperform the U.S. Light Vehicle SAAR driven by Toyota's recovery and BMW 3-series launch coming online appears largely reflected in the Street's estimates at this time; and 3) at current levels, valuation appears in line with the group's average and relatively in line with GPI's historical levels, while the potential for the multiple expansion we anticipated has weakened near term. We are maintaining our earnings estimates at $4.55 (First Call Consensus $4.66) for 2012 and at $5.01 (First Call Consensus $5.22) for 2013, as while we are taking down acquisitions assumptions in 2013, we believe SG&A leverage will be better as the expense of integrating acquisitions should be lower, slightly improving profitability.?

Group 1 Automotive closed on Tuesday at $54.31.

Anti-tanning 'Facekinis' cause stir on China beach

AFP - Getty Images

Chinese beachgoers wear body suits and protective head masks, dubbed "facekinis," on a crowded public beach in Qingdao, on Aug. 16.

By Tianzhou Ye, NBC News

BEIJING ??In the West, getting a tan is one of the main reasons for going to the beach.

But in China, some are going to extraordinary lengths to avoid getting a bit of sun with a new item of beachwear???dubbed the Facekini ? causing something of a stir in the coastal tourist city of Qingdao, Shandong Province.

The masks completely cover the swimmers' heads, revealing only their eyes, noses, and mouths.

The styles and colors of the masks suggest a huge happy beach party attended by some lesser superheroes, Mexican wrestlers and perhaps a few bank robbers is underway. In fact, government officials have become concerned that the masks could be used to rob banks, according to a report in The New York Times.

"These have been extremely popular," Zaizaibao (???), an online seller from Henan on the largest shopping website taobao.com, said.

Another online store sold 542 masks, which come in?different colors and patterns, in just 30 days. "We are already out of the pink ones.... All of them sell well. Orange is the most effective in protecting people from sea creatures."

AFP - Getty Images

Users say the face masks are useful in protecting against insects and jellyfish.

The masks are an outward expression of a Chinese understanding of beauty in terms of skin color.

"I myself don't mind getting tanned, but I can see why pale skin is attractive," Alina Zhao, a college student in the U.S. who grew up in Zhejiang, China, said.

"It definitely has to do with the history of China, which is largely an agricultural society,? she added. ?Getting tanned means you work outside in the fields a lot, so skin color is like an indicator of your social status. The fairer you are, the wealthier or more respected you seem."

Umbrellas on a sunny day
In fact, Facekini is only one out of many attempts of the Chinese people to stay fair. The number of umbrellas to be seen in Chinese cities on a hot, sunny day might appear bizarre to many non-Chinese people.

"I first became aware of the phenomenon when I lived in Taiwan for the summer," Simone Cote, from Vermont and currently working in Beijing, said. "I constantly saw that women covered themselves when they went out. They wore pants often, and yes, umbrellas everywhere."

Cote was asked "Why is your skin so dark?" by her host mother in Taiwan.

Within this underlying concept of what is beautiful, the Facekini was perhaps a logical development.

A user of the mask commented in Chinese on taobao.com?that "this item is very effective in keeping the UV [ultra-violet light] out, and it's very comfortable. With this, you can do whatever you want on a beach, with no worries of getting burned or tanned. It's really recommended."

Another user, Tongchao, seems to have debated between the benefit of not getting tanned and the possibility of getting laughed in this mask. "Okay. I've become the focused again, but this item is really useful. It's actually not stuffy at all. I really like it!" Looks like he or she has made a choice ??but not an easy one.

When asked if she would ever wear one, Alina gave her answer without a second thought.

"Of course no! I was never into sunscreen ??I'll never get this fair anyway, so why bother? I would rather enjoy the sun."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood blockbusters as "Top Gun," ''Days of Thunder" and "Beverly Hills Cop II," died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.

The 68-year-old Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said.

Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott's body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner's office.

One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation. Cargo vessels moved at reduced speeds through the east side of the port's main channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Investigators found a note in Scott's car, which was parked on the bridge, according to the Los Angeles Times. That note listed contact information. A suicide note was later found at his office.

The British-born Scott, who lived in Beverly Hills, was producer and director Ridley Scott's brother.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called "Killing Lincoln," based on the best seller by Bill O'Reilly. Their company produced a 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel. Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" was a summer blockbuster.

"Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise, was one of the highest-grossing films of 1986. The pair worked together again four years later on the hit "Days of Thunder."

Scott frequently worked with Denzel Washington, most recently on the runaway train drama "Unstoppable." Scott and Washington collaborated on three other films: "Man on Fire," Deja Vu," and "The Taking of Pelham 123."

In a tweet Sunday, Director Ron Howard said, "No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."

Other Scott films include "True Romance," ''Crimson Tide" and "Enemy of the State."

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott. They have twin sons.

Golf Tidbits: Is winning FedExCup worth it? ? Golf ? The Olympian ? Olympia, Washington news, weather and sports

    Browse >
Home / Golf Articles / Golf Tidbits: Is winning FedExCup worth it? ? Golf ? The Olympian ? Olympia, Washington news, weather and sports

There have been tweaks to the point system, and there may be more to come.

Would it surprise you to learn that just two of the first five FedExCup winners won a PGA Tour event the year after winning the season-long race?

How about two of the previous five champs haven?t won another PGA Tour event since their FedExCup win?

The FedExCup wasn?t set up to be a grueling marathon where you have to play every week to contend, but it seems to have taken a lot out of its? winners, except for one.

Tiger Woods, the only two-time FedExCup champion and current points leader, is the only player to have an outstanding year the season after winning the race.

After Woods won the inaugural FedExCup in 2007, he won five of the seven events he played in 2008 and never finished worse than fifth. of course, he only appeared in seven events because he played the U.S. Open on a broken leg and took the rest of the year off.

That was Woods? last major championship.

In 2008, two of Vijay Singh?s three wins were during the playoffs and they propelled him to victory in the FedExCup. and he hasn?t won since!

Singh followed the FedExCup with just three top-10 finishes the following season, along with six missed cuts. He wasn?t a factor at the four majors and three World Golf Championship events.

Woods claimed his second FedExCup in 2009, but everything went downhill for him two months later when he had his Thanksgiving traffic accident.

He didn?t play until the Masters in 2010 and tied for fourth at Augusta. Woods did the same at the U.S. Open, but he missed the cut at Quail Hollow after posting rounds of 74-79. his total of 153 was his worst as a professional.

Jim Furyk, like Singh, hasn?t won a PGA Tour event since winning the 2010 FedExCup. He had more missed cuts (seven) than top 10s (four) in 2011. He?s gotten back into he mix this year, but has coughed up the U.S. Open and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Reigning FedExCup champ bill Haas carried the momentum into this season as he collected four top-20 finishes in his first five starts, including a win at the Northern Trust Open.

Since that quick start, Haas has just two more top-20 finishes and has missed four cuts.

Entering the final regular-season event, Haas ranks 25th on the FedExCup points list. He is in danger of becoming the fifth straight reigning FedExCup champ to fail to qualify for the following year?s Tour Championship.

The $10 million prize for winning the FedExCup is a huge boost, but it also seems to carry a heavy burden that hurts the winner the next year.

    IS WESTWOOD PANICKING?

After a poor performance at the PGA Championship, Lee Westwood has dropped both his swing coach and his temporary caddie.

Westwood?s normal looper, Billy Foster, blew his knee out while warming up for a soccer match in early May.

The Englishman could be panicking, or just looking for a new voice both on the bag and with his swing. Since winning the Nordea Masters the week before the U.S. Open, Westwood?s results have gotten progressively worse.

He shared 10th at the U.S. Open, tied for 40th at the Open de France, shared 45th at the British Open, took 70th in a 79-player event at the WGC- Bridgestone Invitational, then missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

The FedExCup playoffs are looming next week and the Ryder Cup is at the end of September, which makes the timing of these moves is a little curious.

Known as one of the best players without a major championship, Westwood should have waited until after the Ryder Cup to start with these changes. The last thing he needs to be doing at those matches is trying to groove a new swing.

To each his own, but I think he should waited.

    * many players have their own causes or charities that they back. It?s good to see them give back in times of tragedy too. Arjun Atwal, a native of India & Sikh, made a donation to the fund that will help the victims of the Sikh shooting in Wisconsin.

    * Among those on the outside looking in right now for the FedExCup playoffs are Retief Goosen, Chris DiMarco, Stewart Cink, John Daly, Stuart Appleby and Camilo Villegas ? all of whom are between 126th and 146th on the points list.

"Desi style fusion halal American Chinese Authentic Food" is actually a thing

After having read one too many articles?about the abundance and diversity of cuisines in Jackson Heights, we finally decided it was time to go see what all the fuss was about.?And so we ventured to Queens, on a culinary tour of sorts, meticulously planning to eat our way through the entire neighborhood.

That was the intention anyway. In reality, we felt so full after our first stop into a restaurant serving Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani style Chinese that our foodie expedition ended right there. But at least I got to try masala onion rings - the concept of which was very novel and exciting to me: Battered and deep-fried and smothered (and caramelized?) in some kind of spicy masala sauce. We also stocked up on pounds and pounds of nuts, which is absolutely nuts to do when you need to fly across the Atlantic to get home. I guess we just got a little carried away.
