How the smell of food affects how much you eat

Bite size depends on the familiarly and texture of food. Smaller bite sizes are taken for foods which need more chewing and smaller bite sizes are often linked to a sensation of feeling fuller sooner. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Flavour, launched today, shows that strong aromas lead to smaller bite sizes and suggests that aroma may be used as a means to control portion size.
The aroma experience of food is linked to its constituents and texture, but also to bite size. Smaller bites sizes are linked towards a lower flavour release which may explain why we take smaller bites of unfamiliar or disliked foods. In order to separate the effect of aroma on bite size from other food-related sensations researchers from the Netherlands developed a system where a custard-like dessert was eaten while different scents were simultaneously presented directly to the participants nose.
The results showed that the stronger the smell the smaller the bite. Dr Rene A de Wijk, who led the study, explained, "Our human test subjects were able to control how much dessert was fed to them by pushing a button. Bite size was associated with the aroma presented for that bite and also for subsequent bites (especially for the second to last bite). Perhaps, in keeping with the idea that smaller bites are associated with lower flavour sensations from the food and that, there is an unconscious feedback loop using bite size to regulate the amount of flavour experienced."
This study suggests that manipulating the odour of food could result in a 5-10% decrease in intake per bite. Combining aroma control with portion control could fool the body into thinking it was full with a smaller amount of food and aid weight loss.
BioMed Central's open access journal Flavour, launched today is a peer-reviewed, open access, online journal that publishes interdisciplinary articles on flavour, its generation, perception, and influence on behaviour and nutrition. Flavour aims to understand the psychophysical, psychological and chemical aspects of flavour, which include not only taste and aroma, but also chemesthesis, texture, and all the senses.

"If [church] teaching on homosexual acts is ever to change, the basic teaching governing all sexual acts must change," he said.
Robinson, a priest since 1960 and auxiliary bishop of Sydney from 1984 until his retirement for health reasons in 2004, told the Baltimore symposium, sponsored by New Ways Ministry, that "because sex is so vital a way of expressing love, sex is always serious."
That view, espoused by the church, stands in contrast to the general perception of modern society, which "appears to be saying more and more that sex is not in itself serious," he said.
For the church to deal with sex seriously, however, does not in itself mean that the church must continue to accept uncritically its traditional understandings of sexual morality, he said.
Robinson was a featured speaker at the March 15-17 symposium, which drew about 400 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning Catholics and church personnel ministering to them.?
The gathering's first day was devoted to a spiritual retreat guided by the bishop.
At the symposium's lunch Friday, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley addressed the group on a pending state law, which he had signed just days earlier, legalizing same-sex marriage in the state.
Opponents of the new law have launched a campaign for a popular referendum in November to revoke it, but several recent polls have indicated that a slight but growing majority of the state's voting population favors legalization of same-sex marriages.
In his talk later that afternoon -- available along with other writings on his website -- Robinson did not address the growing U.S. question of whether faithful same-sex unions should be blessed with the title and all legal rights of "marriage."?But he argued that the church's moral appraisal of such unions would change dramatically if it were to reevaluate its traditional approach to all human sexual activity.
He said while the church's emphasis on the profound significance of sex is correct, its natural law approach to sexual morality and its interpretation of ancient scriptural passages on homosexual and other sexual activity are in need of correction.
Robinson -- whose activities before he became a bishop included teaching canon law and heading the Canon Law Society of Australia and New Zealand -- said his own full realization of how serious sex was came when the Australian bishops called on him to head an investigation into the causes of clerical sexual abuse of minors in his country and how to resolve those problems.
"Paradoxically, it was the effects of the sexual abuse of minors more than anything else that convinced me that sex is serious," he said.
He began his talk with three basic premises:
- "There is no possibility whatsoever of a change in the teaching of the Catholic church on the subject of homosexual acts unless and until there is first a change in its teaching on heterosexual acts.
- "There is a serious need for a change in the church's teaching on heterosexual acts.
- "If and when this change occurs, it will inevitably have its effect on teaching on homosexual acts."
"If the starting point [as in current church teaching] is that every single sexual act must be both unitive and procreative, there is no possibility of approval of homosexual acts," Robinson said.
He proceeded, however, to question that natural law argument, especially as laid out by recent popes, and to suggest that a more nuanced reading of divine commandments in scripture and of Jesus' teaching would lead to a different set of moral norms -- starting with a change in church teaching that every sexual act or thought that falls outside a loving conjugal act open to procreation is a mortal sin because it is a direct offense against God himself in his divine plan for human sexuality.
"For centuries the church has taught that every sexual sin is a mortal sin. The teaching may not be proclaimed as loudly today as much as before, but it was proclaimed by many popes, it has never been retracted and it has affected countless people," Robinson said.
"The teaching fostered a belief in an incredibly angry God," he added, "for this God would condemn a person to an eternity in hell for a single unrepented moment of deliberate pleasure arising from sexual desire. I simply do not believe in such a God. Indeed, I positively reject such a God."
Robinson has been a source of controversy in the church since at least 2002, when he called for Pope John Paul II to commission a church-wide study of clerical sexual abuse of minors in the church.
His 2007 book, Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church: Reclaiming the Spirit of Jesus, drew ire from his fellow bishops in Australia, who objected to his 2008 lecture tour in the United States to speak on some of the issues addressed in his book.

In those days, there were no computers, cell phones, or message machines ? great productivity devices. Today, technological advances are not the only changes in the work place. Selling and sales skills are more important than ever before. Everyone wants to increase sales and obtain a bigger piece of the pie, but it is increasingly difficult to achieve this goal.
Several reasons for this difficulty include more competition; purchasing decisions are being impacted by pricing, and lack of confidence in economic policy.
Sales just do not ?happen? by showing up ? they never did and never will. Management executives with this antiquated view are having a difficult time in understanding why their business is not growing. The attitude that we are doing the same things now as before and it has always worked is no longer valid. The view of ?we don?t need sales people or training? is out with the typewriter.

I can?t say anything about this next bit of silliness, out just today, that could possibly add to the comedic value of it all.

?Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards accused FIFA and UEFA of ?stealing football? from England before falling into a swimming pool at a conference in Qatar.?
Yup. That?s from the Goal.com report. (It?s funnier if you read it aloud in your best SNL-Weekend Update-Seth Meyers voice. Seriously. Try it.)
Richards was apparently banging on about Qatar, the infamously chosen site for World Cup 2022 and a land were alcohol is quite limited. Richards wasn?t happy about ? well, a lot of thing, apparently. But he was specifically hot and bothered about Qatar?s indecision on allowing beer sales at the grounds in 2022.
As The New York Daily News explains in this piece from a few days ago: ?Qatar, a nation with conservative Muslim traditions but which has a significant population of foreign workers, limits the sale of alcohol mostly to five-star hotels. It doesn?t sell alcohol currently at football matches.?

As some of you know, I?m engaged.
Like most women, I?ve been dreaming of my perfect wedding day. It goes like this ? I wake up, brush my hair and put on a nice light blue dress. We have a simple breakfast with the two people who?ll be our witnesses. Pretty soon we make our way to the courthouse for our scheduled appointment with the judge. We?re positioned in her chambers, where she reminds us of the important step we are taking, and asks whether we swear to love and cherish each other, to make the bed and get the groceries together ?til death do us part. We do, so we sign the appropriate forms. We have a small dinner with our closest family and friends, and off we go on our honeymoon to check out glaciers in Iceland.
That?s it.
I never wanted a big wedding ceremony or a fancy reception. Maybe it?s because I?m an introvert, and the idea of being the center of attention for a day freaks me out. But I also balk at the idea of spending a large sum of money on a single day, and expecting red envelopes from well-meaning Chinese guests to help pay for it.
With my courthouse wedding, we get what we long for ? legality, simplicity, and the intimate well wishes of our closest friends and family. And all that money we didn?t spend, well, that goes towards what we really need in our new life together, like a house, a DVD collection, and maybe a Siamese cat. I always wanted one of those.
My dear mom, however, has always been good about jolting me out of what she considers my silliest flights of fancy. ?You think there are no expenses with a courthouse wedding?? she retorted. ?You think getting married costs so little??
?For the wedding day, yes.?
?Stop dreaming lah. You don?t want a nice dress? And this so-called small dinner for closest family and friends ? you already have a dozen aunts and uncles on my side, not including their spouses. And your dad?s side has more! Even if we exclude your many cousins, that?s a lot! And a honeymoon. These are all expenses! Are you sure he can pay for everything??
Now, I was still daydreaming until her last line. ?He? Pay for everything? Why does he have to pay for everything??
?Because he?s the guy.?
?Doesn?t the bride?s family pay for the wedding?? I asked, confused. ?I thought that by having a small wedding, I would save you and dad money.?
?Save us money!? my mom is laughing her head off by now, tickled at the idea. ?The groom?s side is supposed to pay for everything, and he should give us a peng kam [dowry] for you. I hope he?s not trying to be a cheapskate!?
That night, I told all this to my fiance. ?Hon, they said you?re supposed to pay for the wedding.?
?What?? he was shocked. ?I would have offered to help pay anyway, but? I thought the bride?s family pays for the wedding.?
Turns out he and my mother were both right.
In Chinese culture, the groom?s side pays.
In the West/America, the bride?s side pays.
Of course, lots of couples, cross-cultural or not, no longer follow these ?rules.? Many couples decide to split the bill, or pay for the wedding themselves without the help of their families. My fiance, out of respect for my parents, has offered to become Chinese and pay for everything, including a traditional wedding dinner, though we?ll probably settle on sharing expenses, which I want to keep to a minimum. But I did get a good giggle thinking about what would happen if East-West couples insisted on following their respective traditions:

Depp, Streep join call to lower 'Bully' rating
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? More Hollywood heavyweights are joining the call for a lower rating on the teen-focused documentary "Bully."
The Weinstein Co, which is releasing the film March 30, said Tuesday that Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees have signed on to support the film.
Lee Hirsch's documentary on bullying in American schools has been rated R, which restricts children under 17 from seeing it without an adult. The Motion Picture Association of America, which oversees movie ratings, cited language as the reason for the R rating.
Distributors appealed the decision, but it was upheld by the MPAA.
That prompted a Michigan teenager who was bullied in middle school to start an online petition calling for a lower rating for the film so more young people can see it. She met with MPAA officials last week and delivered the 200,000 signatures she collected, but the group declined to change the rating.
Katy Butler, a 17-year-old high school junior from Ann Arbor, now has nearly 300,000 signatures on her petition on Change.org. Among them is that of New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who tweeted Monday that she supports the teen's effort to lower the film's R rating to PG-13. Gerry Lopez, chief of AMC Theaters, also added his name to the petition, the Weinstein Co. said.
MPAA spokesman Howard Gantman did not address the possibility of a PG-13 for "Bully" in his response Tuesday to the growing call for a revision of its rating.
"We respect the viewpoints of members of Congress and the public and Hollywood celebrities who care deeply about an issue that is troubling our nation," he said in an email. "The MPAA shares the goal of shining a light on the problems caused by bullying, and we hope that this new film and the national discussion about it among educators, parents and students will help lead to ways to better ensure that kids feel safe and protected when they come to school."

Republicans fight hard for the deep South
Republican candidates battled hard Monday on the eve of key deep South votes as a poll said front-runner Mitt Romney would beat Democrat President Barack Obama if elections were held today.
In a boost to Romney's campaign, a national poll by ABC News and The Washington Post on Monday for the first time gave the former Massachusetts governor the edge against Obama, hit by anger over rising gas prices.
If elections were held today, Romney would beat Obama 49 percent to 47 percent, the poll revealed, adding Obama's approval rating has plunged below 50 percent as he bids for a second term in the November vote.
Perhaps more worrying for the Obama campaign, the poll also showed rising national support for Romney's main rival Rick Santorum.
The survey suggests the president would only narrowly win against the former Pennsylvania senator, by 49 percent to 46 percent, underscoring the extent to which support for the the president has fallen.
Romney, who Monday marked his 65th birthday, is racking up the delegates towards the party's nomination. So far he has almost 40 percent of the 1,144 needed to win, with Santorum and former House speaker Newt Gingrich trailing.
Amid calls to quit and allow the conservative vote to coalesce around one candidate, Gingrich is fighting to stay in the race to be the Republican party nominee to challenge Obama.
He has said Tuesday's primaries in Alabama and Mississippi are must-wins after pocketing just two of the 26 contests held so far.
Hawaii also holds caucuses on Tuesday, and Romney has sent his son, Matt, to the islands to stump for him, while Santorum's daughter, Elizabeth, was also in Hawaii -- where Obama spent much of his childhood.
The stakes couldn't be higher on Tuesday for Gingrich, who must sweep both Mississippi and Alabama if he is to change the narrative of the race.
Pollsters Public Policy Polling said, however, it "looks like it's going to be a close election night in both Mississippi and Alabama."
"It's not really clear who, if anyone has the momentum in these states," it said, pointing to "the split in the conservative vote" which could let Romney win.
According to PPP's polling, Gingrich held a slight lead in Mississippi with 33 percent over 31 percent for Romney, with Santorum on 27 percent. In Alabama, the race is even closer with 31 percent for Romney, 30 percent for Gingrich and 29 percent for Santorum.
Romney has now won 17 of the 26 state or territory votes, compared to seven wins for Santorum -- eight if you include a straw poll in Missouri -- and none for Texas congressman Ron Paul.
With 455 delegates, Romney has almost 40 percent of the 1,144 needed to secure the nomination. Santorum trails with 199 delegates and Gingrich has 117, according to authoritative aggregator RealClearPolitics.
This lead means Romney's competitors must win some 70-75 percent of the remaining delegates -- which are handed out proportionally by district in many states -- in order to snatch the nomination.
"Mathematically, this thing is about over, but emotionally it's not," senior Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Sunday.
"If Romney does well, wins either Mississippi or Alabama and wins Illinois (on March 20), then I think it's virtually impossible for this thing to continue much beyond early May," Graham added.
In a CBS/New York Times Poll released Monday, Republican voters gave Santorum a four-point edge over Romney nationally with 34 percent to 30 percent, with Newt Gingrich getting 13 percent and Ron Paul 8 percent.
But 73 percent say they expect Romney will get the Republican nod.
Gingrich has been touting his energy plan to bring down the cost of gas, saying: "We need an American energy policy that makes us independent of the Middle East so that no American president ever again bows to a Saudi king."
Romney meanwhile has been awkwardly trying to spread some southern charm, starting his rallies with a southern drawl of "hello y'all."
But locals weren't impressed when he called a local delicacy "cheesy grits" instead of "cheese grits."
Santorum meanwhile got an endorsement from reality-television stars, the Duggars Family, star of the television series "19 kids and Counting."
"We ask people who are looking for the conservative, family values candidate to get behind Rick Santorum. Rick has always stood for lower taxes, less government intervention in our lives, and is somebody who will really make a difference as president of the United States," family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar said.

Chinese tennis star Li speaks from the heart
Chinese tennis star Li Na says she's not about to change her persona just because some people think she might be too outspoken.
Li, who became the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam title last year at the French Open, tells it like it is which is a rare quality among pro athletes from China.
"I always believe if you lie one time you have to use 10 times to recover that one lie," Li said Sunday after beating compatriot Zheng Jie 6-1, 6-3 at the Indian Wells tournament. "So I didn't want do that. I know if I say real things many people will hate me, but doesn't matter. I'm happy."
Li, of Wuhan, has played on the national team and in Fed Cup events in the past but says her main focus right now is on competing on the WTA Tour.
When it comes to Li, what you see is what you get. That's a rarity among pro athletes from China who often seem uncomfortable around the international press. She has been doing her own interviews in English without a translator for about five years.
Li's victory in the French Open final over Francesca Schiavone helped boost tennis in China, and made Li a sought-after and well-rewarded product endorser.
But the sport still has a long way to go to catch football, basketball or table tennis in popularity, and she insists she is not interested in being a national icon.
"Many people think, 'Oh, she's maybe next to Yao Ming or something,' Li said.
"I think for me I'm only a tennis athlete. I'm not here for the country. I just play my tennis. I am just doing my job to try the best."
On Sunday, Li snapped a four-match losing streak to Chinese compatriot Zheng with a win in the third round.
The last time Li faced Zheng was six years ago in Estoril where she lost in straight sets. Her losing streak dated back to their first WTA Tour encounter in 2004 in Beijing.
"It is tough to play someone from the same country because we know a lot about each other," Li said. "I was so happy because it is the first time I beat her."

Prince Harry sells Britain on first visit to Brazil
Prince Harry launched a high-profile campaign in Brazil to promote all things British ahead of the 2012 London summer Olympics on his first visit to the South American economic power.
Making his first solo tour, he flew into the "Marvellous City" earlier in the day for a three-day official visit following his tour of Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica. He was escorted to a hotel in Copacabana.
The prince then had lunch in a local steakhouse before being treated to a 30-minute helicopter tour of the city's major tourist attractions, including Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, the imposing statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the spectacular Rio bay, local television reported.
Prince Harry later strolled along Ipanema beach, then joined festivities including samba dance and capoeira martial art presentations, before kicking off the Britain promotion campaign from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.
The campaign aimed to highlight what makes Britain great in 2012 as it celebrates 60 years of Queen Elizabeth's reign and hosts the summer Olympics.
Prince Harry was greeted at the event by Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, Rio State Governor Sergio Cabral as well as by the Samba band Uniao da Ilha, which paraded at this year's Rio Carnival to the theme of London to Rio, the two cities which will respectively host the 2012 and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The campaign was also conceived to deliver long-term economic benefits from the interest generated by the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Britain is the fourth largest foreign investor in Brazil and the event showcased many of the top British businesses operating in the country, including BP.
Last December, Latin America's dominant power displaced Britain as the world's sixth largest economy.
More than 700 top investors, artists, cultural leaders, entrepreneurs and opinion-makers from across Brazil were invited to the event, which also celebrated the strong ties between Britain and Brazil.
Guests were to enjoy an exclusive menu prepared by top British and Brazilian chefs Marcus Wareing and Roberta Sudbrack, while a cocktail designed specifically for the event by Claridge's hotel was to be served in a bar created by London's renowned Groucho Club.
On Saturday, Prince Harry was to attend a British and Brazilian-themed sports day on Flamengo beach and tour a favela complex pacified by security forces since November 2010, according to city officials.
On Sunday, the prince was to take part in a polo match in Sao Paulo to raise money for Sentabale, his charity in Lesotho, and several local charities.
His tour is one of several being made by British royals in 2012 as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
