Former Central Memorial High School baseball coach Eugene Butler was honored during a dinner at Western Sizzlin on Tuesday.

Butler, 78,? was presented a certificate of appreciation and recognition by former players. Butler led the Spartans to the state championship in 1967. Central Memorial finished the season 20-1 after defeating Lake Providence in the title game.

?We had an exceptional team,? Butler said. ?We outhit and outpitched them and didn?t make any errors.

?I don?t want to take all the credit. The kids were good and disciplined and we had good parents.?

The Spartans were led by Charlie Spikes,? who was drafted in the first round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees. Spikes also played for the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves.

The award was preliminary to group plans of honoring Butler during the 2012 Central Memorial High School Mass Class Reunion.

Attending the dinner Tuesday with Butler were Freddie Jefferson, Thomas D. Kates, Cloetha Burrell, Billy Harriel, Duke ?Chip? Otis and Larry Brown.
