JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Former South African President Nelson Mandela was hospitalized Saturday with a stomach ailment, according to a government statement issued about the 93-year-old beloved anti-apartheid icon.

Mandela "has had a long-standing abdominal complaint and doctors feel it needs proper specialist medical attention," President Jacob Zuma said, asking that Mandela's privacy be respected.

The statement did not say at which hospital Mandela was being treated. In 2011, he was hospitalized for a few days with an acute respiratory infection.

Mac Maharaj, Zuma's spokesman, said he could not immediately elaborate but that he would be issuing regular updates. The South African military, which had taken charge of Mandela's health care after he was hospitalized last year, and a spokesman for Mandela's office said he would have no statement Saturday.

Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in prison for his fight against racist apartheid rule, and he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Well-wishers like Derek Kemper, a 47-year-old emergency services consultant, said they hoped Mandela would soon recover.

Kemper said he fought Mandela's African National Congress, now the country's governing party, as a soldier for the apartheid state. On Saturday, he was touring Soweto, the famed Johannesburg township set aside for blacks under apartheid and still largely black and poor, with a group of other whites. Kemper marveled at how far the country had come, and credited Mandela.

"He had the wisdom to try to reunite the country." Kemper said, speaking in front of a Soweto home where Mandela once lived that has been turned into a museum celebrating Mandela's life.

Kemper said he believed that even though Mandela has largely retired from public life, he has a moderating influence on younger black South Africans who may be impatient with the pace of change in their country. Kemper said he worried about whether the commitment to reconciliation would outlive Mandela.

But Kefiloe Molepo, a 19-year-old student who grew up just around the corner from Mandela's home, said there was little cause for concern. Molepo, walking home from church, said he was raised on stories about Mandela, who he said was a friend of his great-grandfather.

"When he was set free, he didn't think of vengeance," Molepo said. "He wanted peace for the nation."

Mandela's public appearances have become increasingly rare, though he did appear at the closing ceremony of the World Cup in July 2010. Mandela also held a private meeting with Michelle Obama when the U.S. first lady traveled to South Africa with her daughters last year.

Mandela has taken up permanent residence at his home in Qunu, in the southwestern region of South Africa where he was raised. Earlier this year, Mandela came to his Johannesburg home for what Zuma's office said would be a brief stay while maintenance was done at his Qunu home. Zuma's office said then that Mandela was in good health.

Mandela's last surviving sibling, a sister, died last month near Qunu. Makhulu Nothusile Bhulehluthi was 82. Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, their father, had several wives and 31 children.

The findings may help explain why risk of drug abuse and addiction increase so dramatically when cocaine use begins during teenage years.

The results were published in the Feb. 14 and Feb. 21 issues of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Researchers including those at Yale have shown that vulnerability to cocaine is much higher in adolescence, when the brain is shifting from an explosive and plastic growth phase to more settled and refined neural connections characteristic of adults. Past studies at Yale have shown that the neurons and their synaptic connections in adolescence change shape when first exposed to cocaine through molecular pathway regulated by the gene integrin beta1, which is crucial to the development of the nervous system of vertebrates.

"This suggests that these structural changes observed are probably protective of the neurocircuitry, an effort of the neuron to protect itself when first exposed to cocaine," said Anthony Koleske, professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and of neurobiology and senior author of both papers.

In the latest study, Yale researchers report when they knocked out this pathway, mice needed approximately three times less cocaine to induce behavioral changes than mice with an intact pathway.

The research suggests that the relative strength of the integrin beta1 pathway among individuals may explain why some cocaine users end up addicted to the drug while others escape its worst effects, Koleske theorized.

"If you were to become totally desensitized to cocaine, there is no reason to seek the drug," he said.

Koleske and Jane R. Taylor, professor of psychiatry and psychology and an author of the Feb. 14 paper, are teaming up with other Yale researchers to look for other genes that may play a role in protecting the brain from effects of cocaine and other drugs of abuse.

Shannon Gourley, now of Emory University who worked with Koleske and Taylor, is lead author on the Feb. 14 paper detailing how the structural response to cocaine protects against cocaine sensitivity. Anastasia Oleveska and Michael S. Warren are other Yale authors on this paper. Warren and William D. Bradley of Yale are co-lead authors of the latest Neuroscience paper describing the role for integrin beta 1 in the control of adolescent synapse and dendrite refinement and stability. Yu-Chih Lin, Mark A. Simpson, Charles A. Greer are other Yale-affiliated authors.

Performance
Audiophiles might not love what happens to the signal at higher volumes?if a track has deep bass frequencies, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," digital signal processing is employed to prevent distortion. The net result is a thinner sound at maximum volumes, with the bass response toned down enough that it sounds like someone seriously tinkered with the equalization. However, the speakers would distort without the signal processing, so the signal is, at least, always clean?a trick also used by Bowers & Wilkins' MM-1 ($499.95, 4 stars). Additionally, the bass response at top volumes would likely rattle frames off your walls if it weren't limited to some degree. As noted earlier, the inAir 5000 gets quite loud, and before the bass is rolled back at top volumes, it provides tremendous thump.

At moderate-to-medium-loud listening levels, the bass is smooth and robust. The Knife's "Silent Shout" thuds along with its thunderous electronic kick, but John Adams' classical piece, "The Chairman Dances," also has a surprising amount of low-end presence. Audiophiles looking for flat response may not love the serious bass boost provided by the inAir 5000's powerful sub, but it has an articulate, never muddy, presence that enhances rather than detracts from the overall performance. That said, it's probably most ideal for modern pop, rock, hip hop, and electronic music. While the mids and highs are clear and bright, bringing out the attack of strings and higher percussion, the signal processing at top volumes not only drops the bass, but also makes the treble sharper and less pleasant. Honestly, though, there is no need to listen at top volume with this system. It sounds excellent a medium-level, which is still quite loud, and beyond that, there's still some wiggle room before the signal processing kicks in and starts to change the sound in ways that aren't spectacular.

Set-up is a breeze, which cannot be said for all AirPlay docks. Where Audyssey's Audio Air Dock, for instance, makes you initiate the connection of the dock to your Wi-Fi network via a computer browser, the inAir 5000 immediately prompts you to download an app once you connect your iOS device via a (not included) 30-pin-to-USB charging cable. The app walks you through the set-up, which takes only a few minutes. You'll need a Wi-Fi network, and you'll need to know the password in order to complete the process. Once complete, the inAir 5000 shows up as an AirPlay option on the playback menu for your device.

Alas, as with most of the AirPlay docks we've reviewed thus far, like the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air, getting a steady connection is sometimes challenging. However, among the most recently-tested docks, the inAir 5000 generally fares far better. The Klipsch and Audyssey docks have some serious issues with staying connected via Wi-Fi for long periods of time?an issue that, hopefully, a rumored-to-be-in-the-works iOS update will fix. The inAir 5000 is not flawless, though, and if you live in a large building with several competing wireless networks, prepare for some signal losses, and even occasionally going through the entire set-up process again?which is annoying, but thankfully not a time consuming ordeal.

At this point, Apple's AirPlay, while wonderful in its simplicity, is undeniably hampered by these streaming issues. The inAir 5000 is, by far, the least compromised AirPlay dock of the current new crop, but with fantastic-sounding Bluetooth options like the Editors' Choice JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95, 4.5 stars) available, $500 is a hard sell until these issues are fixed. That said, the inAir 5000 sounds excellent when devices are directly connected or streaming is not interrupted?and it stays connected for much longer periods of time than the Klipsch and Audyssey models. Apple will likely update iOS at some point, and murmurs within the industry imply that the update will fix AirPlay's streaming issues, but until then, the inAir 5000, like its Klipsch and Audyssey peers, is a great speaker system at the mercy of a buggy central feature.
