OWC certifies 480GB Mercury Aura Pro SSD for 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

OWC certifies 480GB Mercury Aura Pro SSD for 13inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

The inside of a MacBook Pro certainly isn't for the faint of heart, but if you're willing to pair your recklessness with a side of wild abandon, then you might just have what it takes to upgrade the storage of the Retina-equipped 13-inch model. OWC is more than willing to test your limits with its 480GB Mercury Aura Pro, an SSD module that's now certified for use with Apple's latest laptop. While its $580 price will deter many, the 480GB option compares favorably to the 512GB upgrade from Apple, which rings in at a healthy $800. OWC says that additional capacity sizes will be announced this November, which is reason to remain hopeful if this one has priced you out of the market.

Retirement worries grow; 30-somethings most uneasy

(AP) ? Younger Americans in their late 30s are now the group most likely to doubt they will be financially secure after retirement, a major shift from three years ago when baby boomers nearing retirement age expressed the greatest worry.

The survey findings by the Pew Research Center, released Monday, reflect the impact of a weak economic recovery beginning in 2009 that has shown stock market gains while housing values remain decimated.

As a whole, retirement worries rose across all age groups ? roughly 38 percent of U.S. adults say they are "not too" or "not at all" confident that they will have sufficiently sized financial nest eggs, according to the independent research group. That's up from 25 percent in 2009.

But the concerns are increasing the greatest among younger adults approaching middle age, whose equity in their homes represents most of their net worth. About 49 percent of those ages 35-44 said they had little or no confidence that they will have enough money for retirement, more than double the 20 percent share in that age group who said so in 2009.

Baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 also reported having more retirement anxieties than before, but now to a lesser degree compared to their younger counterparts. About 43 percent of Americans ages 45-54 expressed little or no trust in their retirement security, up from 33 percent in 2009. Among Americans ages 55-64, the share expressing little or no confidence was 39 percent, up from 26 percent.

Broken down by smaller groups, the Pew analysis found that retirement worries peaked among adults in their late 30s; a majority, or 53 percent, of Americans ages 36 to 40 lacked confidence that they will have large enough nest eggs. Just three years ago, it was baby boomers ages 51 to 55 who had the most anxiety over whether their income and assets would be sufficient.

Richard Morin, a senior editor at Pew who co-authored the report, said the shift in attitudes was somewhat surprising.

"I think most people would expect those on the cusp of retirement ? ages 55 to 64 ? would be the most concerned about financing their retirement, (so) the finding that the peak is now occurring among adults roughly 20 years younger is notable," he said. "Moreover, the wealth data showing those approaching or in early middle age had lost the most in the past decade suggests that their concerns are not misplaced."

Morin said that it is hard to predict whether 30-somethings will continue to express the most retirement worries in the years to come, but said it was a "real possibility" given that housing values aren't expected to fully recover anytime soon.

The latest findings come as the presidential campaigns focus most often on retirement issues such as Social Security and Medicare when appealing to older voters. In recent weeks, President Barack Obama has pounded Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, saying their plan to replace Medicare with vouchers won't keep up with health care costs. Ryan has sought to reassure seniors by saying that he and Romney won't alter Medicare for those in or near retirement.

An Associated Press-LifeGoesStrong.com poll in late 2011 also found that concerns about retirement were increasing across all age groups, a reflection of the continuing hard economic times.

According to the Pew report, the inflation-adjusted net worth of Americans ages 35 to 44 fell roughly 56 percent from 2001 to 2010, the sharpest decline for any age group and more than double the 22 percent rate of decline for boomers ages 55 to 64. Net worth, also referred to as wealth, is the sum of all assets such as a house, car, stocks and 401(k)s, minus the sum of all debts including mortgage, credit card debt, car and tuition loans.

In dollars, the median wealth of Americans ages 35 to 44 fell by $56,029 to $43,698 over the past decade. In contrast, those ages 45 to 54 and 55 to 64 lost about $50,000. The median wealth of those 65 and older over the past decade increased slightly ? the only age group to experience a gain.

The 35 to 44 age group has been hit the hardest in terms of wealth because they were the ones most likely to have purchased a home at bubble prices during the housing boom, only to see values shrivel in the housing bust. This younger to middle-aged group also largely stayed out of the stock market from 2001 to 2010 and as a result missed out on the stock run-up that began in 2009, according to Pew's analysis of Federal Reserve data.

The S&P 500 index peaked above 1,500 in October 2007 but then fell to a closing low of 676.53 in March 2009. It has risen significantly since then, closing above 1,200 in December 2010 and is now back above 1,400.

Broken down by education and income, adults holding a high school diploma or less were less likely to express confidence in their retirement finances than college graduates, 53 percent vs. 71 percent. Those with family incomes of less than $50,000 also were less confident compared to those making $100,000 or more, 51 percent vs. 79 percent.

The Pew study is based on interviews with 2,508 adults by cell phone or landline from July 16 to 26, as well as an analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finances, which is sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The Pew poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points, larger for subgroups. The AP-LifeGoesStrong.com poll was conducted Oct. 5-12, 2011, by Knowledge Networks of Palo Alto, Calif.

Learning Grammar Through A Second Language | Creative Writing ...

Learning Grammar Through A Second Language | Creative Writing with the Crimson League

I went to great schools as a kid?a real blessing?and I did learn basic grammar in elementary school with official terminology attached, to a greater degree than most of the people I?ve shared stories with. (We even had to do a parts of speech play in fifth grade English. I played ?Adverb,? and won an award for best Adverb in the class. I?m glad I didn?t realize then there is no such thing as a good adverb, ha! At best, adverbs are tolerable in certain contexts. I strive to avoid them.)

Anyway, my point here is that, at least in the United States, it is very, very easy to get through school without ever having an in-depth study of English grammar. That?s a big problem if, like me, you have a love and a passion for writing. But never fear: learning a second language in a classroom will fill in many gaps, as surely as Strunk and White.

SPANISH AND THE SUBJUNCTIVE

I have taught Spanish for two years, and routinely, I have to explain to my students what direct object and indirect objects are, and what the passive voice is. What?s a transitive versus intransitive verb? They just don?t know. They?ve never been taught that. Well, you can?t learn to use direct vs indirect object pronouns correctly in Spanish if you?re not sure what the heck that is in English, can you? So what ends up happening is that students learn the nuts and bolts of English as they?re grappling with Spanish. It?s not an ideal system, perhaps, but it gets results.

A great example of this, in my personal experience, was learning about the subjunctive. The subjunctive is a ?mood? of language that is extremely common in Spanish. I had never been taught about the subjunctive in English class, but when my Spanish teachers explained that we do have it in English to express impossibility, I was astounded. We do, though. Look at this:

I wish I were in Madrid right now. (Usually with ?I? we use ?was,? right? This is the subjunctive, expressing an impossibility. I?m NOT in Madrid.)

If I were you? (I?m not you. I?m me.)

If the car were working, I?d drive you to the store. (Same thing. The car?s not working.)

The subjunctive is loosely used and rarely enforced in English, but if you?re a writer, it?s good to know it exists and how it works. If you have a character who?s highly educated or, in the case of my fantasy novels, a noble, chances are he?d know to say ?If she were here? instead of ?If she was here.?

RED HOUSE/CASA ROJA

Learning Grammar Through A Second Language | Creative Writing with the Crimson League

I once had a student come up to me after an introductory level class, and he said he was having trouble reading in Spanish because he couldn?t digest the adjectives. In Spanish adjectives come after nouns, as in the example phrase this student gave me: ?casa roja,? red (roja) house (casa). He said he didn?t know how to process such phrases because he saw the house first in his mind and then had to adjust the image to conform to the adjectives that followed. I assured him he would get used to this in time and showed him that language is always an arbitrary construction. I told him a Spaniard learning English might be confused by the order of the phrase ?red house.? He might complain that he had to start with a mental image of big glob of red without any object to attach it to, because he was used to the object preceding the descriptions. Struggles and discussions like this, common occurrences throughout the language learning process, really heighten your awareness of what language is and how it works. That is such a plus for a writer!

OTHER PERQS OF BEING A BILINGUAL AUTHOR

If you struggle with the nitty-gritty of grammar, consider studying a second language. It will help you, I promise, and it has so many other advantages for your writing. It opens your mind to new ways to use your first language (Why not break rules sparingly, putting an adjective after a noun for emphasis?) It really drives home to you how ambiguous and imperfect any linguistic system is, and why you need to read your fiction as an outsider would, to make sure what you think you?re writing is actually what?s on the page. (This is one of many, many reasons you need beta readers/an editor.) It exposes you to a new culture and other ways of seeing the world, and that can only help you when it comes to character development. Please, if you never have, do consider studying a second language. It will enrich many aspects of your life as well as your fiction!

The Undebated Debatables: What Was Missing from the - Towleroad

BY?ARI EZRA?WALDMAN

A_560x375Even good debates make me cringe a little. I shudder anytime anyone says he or she is an "undecided" voter not because there's anything inherently wrong with taking time to make a decision, but because the level of disengagement necessary to remain willfully blind to the differences between the President and Governor Romney is dangerous in a democracy. I also fall into the trap of hating everything the other guy says, while starting most of my one-sided arguments with the television by saying, "I would have said [insert amazingly witty, substantively correct, and persuasive comment here]."

Tuesday's debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was striking for a number of reasons. Mr. Romney was exposed as a liar and creepy (at best) when it comes to women. The smackdown on Libya he received and the viral binder meme prove that, not to mention the remarkable throw away comment that the first?time he heard about women receiving unequal pay for equal work was when he became the governor of a state and not when he saw his father run a car company and the entire state of Michigan or when he was in business school and then an investor and then chairman of Bain.

There was one question about immigration and it typically missed the boat: A woman named Lorraine asked Mr. Romney what he would do about "undocumented immigrants" living in America. Mr. Romney's answer, which boiled down to the banal pablum, "I like legal immigration, but not illegal immigration," allowed him to avoid saying that his immigration plan calls for increased border patrol and sending innocent children back to Mexico. The President's response was slightly cleaner but no more substantive, liking legal immigration, too, but also pivoting back to Mr. Romney's statements in favor of the controversial Arizona immigration law.

The problem was not so much with the answers as with the question.

An undocumented worker phenomena is a symptom of an immigration regime too nativistic for the 21st century. It creates perverse incentives for highly skilled artists and scientists, splits up families, and punishes children who just want to grow up, get an education and a job, and contribute to society. The President's policies have ameliorated some of the sharp edges of this antiquated system and have, most notably, made this country a more welcoming place for the HIV-positive community and same-sex binational couples and enforced a mini-DREAM Act by going around Republican intransigence and xenophobia in Congress.

But, as the President likes to say, more needs to be done. And still we are asking the wrong questions. I don't want to know what a Romney Administration would "do about undocumented immigrants;" that's like asking Les Moonves what he would "do" about television. Rather, I want to know precisely how we can change an immigration system from one based on keeping people out to one based on keeping families together, bringing the best and brightest to this country to work, staying safe, and growing the economy.

The DREAM Act is a necessary first step. Let's see why AFTER THE JUMP.

The DREAM Act, which stands for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, would grant a conditional permanent residency status to immigrant children who came to this country as minors, graduated from high school, have good moral character, and lived in the U.S. continuously for five years prior to enactment. Serving in the military and completing some college can also result in conditional permanent residency. With that status, they can apply for permanent residency after fulfilling certain other requirements.?

Child-Dream1It was originally introduced in 2001 by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin (D) and Utah Senator Orrin Hatch (R). But, by the time Senator Hatch faced a feisty Tea Party challenger for the Republican nomination, the Senator backed away from his early support. In 2010, 2011, and 2012, the bill was reintroduced in various forms, collectively making the permanent residency goal a little harder to achieve: no in-state tuition discounts, no health care, lower age cap, longer delays, no sponsorship, and requires, among other things, back-tax payments.

In 2011, several Republicans who had supported the DREAM Act ten years earlier withheld their support unless the bill included increased border security and enforcement. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) expressed willingness to compromise, but, as has become their custom, Republicans said no.

Earlier this year, the President announced that he was not going to let Republican nativism stand in the way of reform by ordering his Administration to stop deporting those who met most of the DREAM Act requirements. That policy would be reversed if Governor Romney wins in October.

The DREAM Act is supported on the left because it can help raise innocent young persons out of poverty, give them access to education, and bring many more immigrants away from the fringes of official society. The business community supports it because it offers access to millions of new, legal workers. Immigrant communities support it because it would rescue their populations from a kind of legal limbo where they are constantly looking over their shoulders. The only people who do not support it are law-and-order type Republicans (and pretty much 80 percent of the Republican caucus in the House and Senate) who feel that it rewards illegal immigrants.?

Republican opposition to the DREAM Act willfully ignores the positive economic and social benefits of integration of fringe populations and denies the fact that DREAM Act targets -- young persons -- never made the decision to come to this country on their own. They are here because their parents came here, seeking nothing more than a better life and opportunity for the next generation. They are, therefore, no different from young American citizens whose parents would do just about anything to ensure their success.

Therefore, we should ask ourselves the following questions: Why would we want an immigration system that deports children trying to get an education and contribute to American society? Why would we want to punish innocent young people who came here at the whims of their parents? Why, when the business, military, education, and health care communities favor reform would we deny their bipartisan voices in favor of nativism and xenophobia?

The answer, of course, is Republican politics. More immigrants on a path to citizenship means more Democratic voters and a shrinking white majority. They think it means dilution of "American culture" and a hodge podge of languages on official government forms. They think the DREAM Act, like the freedom to marry, brings the end of days.

Mitt_romneyGovernor Romney, the "severe" conservative from the Republican primary and the man who said immigrants do not "deserve" the American dream, likes to smile and say he likes immigration. But, not only did he never have "binders full of women" at Bain, he never had binders full of minorities anywhere. His team at Bain almost exclusively consisted of white men; his Massachusetts cabinet included one racial minority until the Democratic legislature pilloried him for it. But all of that is for show; anyone can puff up their moderate credentials by appointing a token [insert excluded group here] to [position he doesn't really care about].

Mitt Romney is strikingly unqualified to be president because of his ignorance. He never knew gay persons wanted to have families before he summarily and rudely dismissed a lesbian couple from his Boston office. He had no idea women receive less pay for the same work until he became a governor. He has no idea the kind of life he is forcing on immigrant children, remarking once that the farms migrant labor work on are "beautiful." He cannot conceive of the horrors of discrimination because he has no idea it actually happens. And, as such, he will never be willing or able to represent any?minority.

Converting Community and Customers into ... - Small Business Trends

Finding new customers for any business, big or small, is the lifeblood of ?its success and sustainability.?Without new business and making new sales there is no way a business can endure.

As important as that is and has always been, the retention of existing customers and mining those customers for referrals has become much more important.

Companies are awakening to just how valuable this is, and are investing more in retaining existing customers at a much higher level of customer engagement and service. GM has put this at the top of their priority list, and is shooting for 68 percent!

Small business marketing expert and founder of the Duct Tape Marketing System, John Jantsch, talks about the 7 Steps To Creating a Marketing System. ?This system and these steps are fundamental to finding qualified customers and then converting them into referrals. Jantsch defines marketing as: ?getting someone that has a need to know, like, and trust you?.

Developing referrals from people who have a need to like, know, and trust you should be relatively easy and effective, as long as you have a system and you are consistently earning that trust.

Fast forward to the 21st century, where mining customers and referrals can now come from social media platforms and communities, too. Yep, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, Blogs, Podcasts all can be very fertile referral sources. Our social networks give people more opportunity to ?know, like, and trust? us through what we write and say, and what others write and say about us.

Are you working both worlds to develop referrals?

Dennis McEniry, President Online at Estee Lauder Companies, talks about the role social media plays in its brand:??The number one influence on beauty consumers in every market around the world is advice from friends. With social media, not only are they able to get timely brand information directly from brands, but also all of the validation from authorities and friends?.

Here are five things you can do to develop referrals from your community and customers.?

1.?? Build Relationships Versus Transactions
If people do business with people they like, know, and trust, as author Bob Burg says in his best selling book The Go Giver, then building relationships rather than having transactions is the way to do that and get referrals.

2.?? Use Testimonials
Use the power of satisfied customers and loyal followers. Keep updating your testimonials on LinkedIn and put them up on your Websites.

3.?? Ask People?
Identify key people that you can ASK for referrals, a testimonial, or recommendation, who you have no problem endorsing back or referring back, and ASK them.

4.?? Network, Network, and Network?
Blend your online and in person networking strategy and get personal with people. Meet people in person and use the social media platforms as a bridge. They will remember how you make them feel.

5.?? Develop the Referral Habit
Make developing and getting referrals an integral part of your daily activities. ABM?always be networking and always be requesting referrals.

The conversion rate of referrals from satisfied customers is about 50 percent. Use your existing relationships to turn customers into your sales force!

Always be asking the right people the following questions:

?Who do you know that could benefit like you have from this community, product, or service??

?Could you recommend or make an introduction to them for me??

Spend more time mining ?reliable referrals and watch what happens!

Answers to your frequently asked Trademark questions

Do you ever wonder what will prevent another company from using your business name? How about if you?re legally permitted to use the name you picked for your business? Or do you know when you can use the TM symbol with your brand or product name?

Assembled here are all the answers to the most frequently asked questions when it comes to trademarking. If you?re a small business owner, read on to learn more about the trademark, and most importantly, if you need one for your business.

What is a trademark??

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol, or design (or a combination of any of these) that identifies the source of a product or service and distinguishes it from competitors.

What can be trademarked??

Trademark registration can be granted on distinctive names, logos and slogans. You might want to seek a trademark for a product name, company name, company logo, or tagline.

For example, ?Nike?, the Nike swoosh design, and ?Just Do It? are all trademarks owned by Nike to distinguish their products from other athletic companies. But keep in mind that trademark protection only applies to a particular category of goods and services. Nike Inc. may own the mark on a variety of shoes, clothing, sporting goods, etc. But there?s also a Nike Corporation in Sweden that?s involved in heavy machinery, like hydraulic lifting jacks.

What?s the difference between a registered and unregistered trademark??

Trademarks don?t actually have to be registered with the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office). If your company creates a logo or name that you want to use exclusively, you can attach the TM symbol and this essentially gives you ?common law? rights.

However, trademarks that are registered with the USPTO enjoy stronger brand protection (see ?What are the benefits of registering a trademark?? below)

Also keep in mind that in order to claim first use to a name, the name has to be ?trademarkable? (i.e. not already in use by someone else) and needs to be in use in commerce. For example, if you think of a cool company name, you will need to actively market and sell a product or service using that company name for your common law trademark to be valid.

How do I know if a name is available for me to use for my company, product, or service? ?

Before you incorporate or register your business with your state, you?ll need to check the state?s database of company names and make sure the name you want isn?t already in use. Name conflicts are one of the main reasons many LLC, corporation, or DBA applications get rejected. At this point, you should also conduct a free trademark search to check if your business name is available to use at the federal level.

It?s also important to know that you can still infringe on someone else?s mark even if they?ve never formally registered it with the USPTO. For this reason, you should also run a comprehensive nationwide trademark search into state and local databases (beyond just your own state). This should include common law and county registrars.

When should I or can I use the trademark symbol? And what?s the difference between TM and ??

Before you have registered a trademark with the USPTO, you may use the TM symbol. After a trademark is registered with the USPTO, you have the right to use ? in your trademark. Many companies choose to use the TM or ? symbol with the first appearance of the company or product name in a document, and then drop the symbol for each appearance after that.

What are the benefits of registering a trademark??

By registering for U.S. Federal Trademark protection, you?ll be eligible for several benefits, including:

  • Treble damages in some cases of infringement
  • The right to use ? in your trademark
  • A streamlined process for securing your domains and usernames at social sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube
  • Significantly stronger protection than ?common law? (aka. unregistered) marks. This can make it much easier to recover your property, let?s say if someone happens to use your company name as their Twitter handle.

If I?ve already registered my name with the state, do I still need a trademark??

When you incorporate, form an LLC, or file a DBA (Doing Business As) for your new business, this process registers your business name with your state?s secretary of state. Before approving your application, the state checks that your name is distinguishable from all other business names registered in the state. Once approved, the business name is yours, and yours alone, to use within the state. This prevents anyone else from using your name within your state, but it doesn?t offer any kind of protection in the other 49 states.

If you?ve started a business that?s physically tied to your state (i.e. a hair salon or restaurant) and have no plans on expanding into other states, registering your name with the state or county might be enough brand protection for you. However, if you?re planning on conducting business outside your own state (i.e. you sell a product or you provide services and some of your clients may live elsewhere), you should look into trademark protection with the USPTO.

How are trademarks registered and how much does it cost??

To register your business name, you?ll need to file an application with the USPTO: you can file either directly with the USPTO or have an online legal filing service handle it for you. Expect to pay approximately $325 per class in application fees that your mark would fall under and the process can take anywhere from 6-12 months once you submit your application.

It?s also smart to perform a comprehensive trademark search before starting the application process to make sure your name is available (you won?t get an application refund just because your name isn?t available).

While the process of registering a trademark is more involved than registering a DBA, rights to your name will be enforced by both the federal and state governments. As you?re getting your company off the ground, remember that your name represents your brand and business, so take the right steps up front to protect your identity.

Royal Society Runs Science Women Wiki Marathon

60-Second Science

The Royal Society is looking for volunteers create or enhance entries on female scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Quick: name a famous female scientist. If you said ?Marie Curie,? you?re not alone. In fact, a lot of people can?t think of a single other example. Well, England's Royal Society is fixin? to rectify that. On Friday, October 19th, it?s sponsoring a Wiki-editing marathon for articles about women in science.

Wikipedia is the go-to source for information on pretty much everything. But its coverage is a little light when it comes to the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and math. So the Royal Society is looking for volunteers with Wi-Fi and a bit of Wiki knowhow to create or enhance entries on female scientists.

Suggestions include Lilian Bland, the first woman to build and fly her own aircraft; Martha Ludwig, who helped solve the first protein crystal structure done in the US; and Barbara Crawford Johnson, the only woman to serve on the NASA team that engineered the moon landing.

You can take part in the effort using Twitter. The hashtag is #WomenSciWP. That?s women-S-C-I-W-P. So give Marie Curie a well-earned rest and help other women in science get the wiki-recognition they deserve.

Ex-manager alleges Britney drug use at trial

Michael Kovac / Getty Images

By Natalie Finn and Claudia Rosenbaum, E! Online

The battle between Britney Spears' parents and her ex-manager has already gotten ugly.?An attorney for Sam Lutfi, who is suing Jamie and Lynne Spears for libel, described in court his client as a concerned friend who "worked very hard to keep Britney Spears off drugs" before a psychiatric episode in 2008 led to her father establishing a conservatorship for her estate and pushing Lutfi out of the picture with a restraining order.

"My client was made a scapegoat for the drug abuse and erratic behavior of Britney Spears," Lutfi's lawyer, Joseph Schleimer, said today in his opening statement. "She liked to use amphetamines -- speed or uppers. She liked to take that drug. And most of the things that went wrong were related to that drug."

Britney's back and as big as ever--most recently cutting contestants on "The X Factor"

Jamie and Lynn, who are divorced, sat together in the courtroom. They took notes during Schleimer's statement and during breaks were seen huddling with their attorneys in the hallway outside.?

Schleimer told the court that Lutfi met Britney in a nightclub at a point in her life when "30 or 40" paparazzi would be following her at any given time. Once he became part of her life, Schleimer continued, Lutfi would alert the paps to their comings and goings to encourage some kind of order amid the frenzy.?

When she met Lutfi, Britney had already completed a stint in rehab (she went to Promises in Malibu in early 2007), fired her other managers and distanced herself from her parents, Schleimer said. She first referred to Lutfi as her manager when she brought him along to a meeting with record execs to discuss "Blackout" and, when they wanted him to leave, she insisted he was her manager.?

Schleimer continued his statement claiming that Lutfi agreed to work for Britney in July 2007 for 15 percent of her earnings and under the condition that she stay clean and let him bring drug-sniffing dogs to search her house. The dogs, the attorney claimed, turned up a bag of crystal meth in a trap door and "hot spots" of residue on the carpet -- which Lutfi later had ripped out and replaced.?

To illustrate his point about the place Britney was at in her life when Lutfi was with her, Schleimer flashed on a screen for the jury to see the infamous photo of Britney, sporting a newly shaved head and an angry sneer, banging on a car with an umbrella.

Warned by L.A. Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bruguera that he would need to be able to back up the allegations he was making with evidence, Schleimer promised to provide either "testimony or documentary evidence."?

On the eve of his wedding, we take a look at Justin Timberlake's many famous exes

Britney, still under the thumb of the conservatorship, has been excused from testifying or appearing in court during these proceedings.

In obtaining a restraining order against Lufti, Jamie and Lynne Spears had accused him of crushing up pills in Britney's food, hiding her cell phone, encouraging paparazzi to follow her and otherwise bothering their daughter.

Lutfi sued them in February 2009 for breach of contract and defamation based on several chapters in a memoir Lynne wrote in which she described Britney's once-constant companion as a manipulator. The conservatorship, meanwhile, is seeking to reclaim $93,000 in attorney fees from Lutfi.

Inside Britney Spears' fortune: See where the money goes

Lutfi and Britney, Schleimer continued after the afternoon break, had a "strong artistic relationship" and his client advised her to go to Las Vegas to work on her dancing for the good of her health.

Excusing the jury from the room, the judge again reminded Schleimer that he better have evidence to support these statements.

"Everything you say, you have to be able to back it up," she admonished him. "You can't waste time on statements just thrown in the air. Everything has to have evidence.... There is no explanation that dancing is the best thing for her health.... I'm trying to make a point and I hope you get it."

Jamie Lynn Spears' daughter, Maddie, dresses up as her famous aunt!

Schleimer continued, telling the court that Lutfi was the one who encouraged Britney to reconcile with her parents, even though Jamie recommended that Britney rehire Larry Rudolph as her manager. Jamie was the one who refused a visit with his grandchildren, Sean and Jayden, when Lutfi suggested it, Schleimer said.

In January 2008, Britney obtained 30 pills of prescription amphetamines, according to Schleimer's statement in court, and took "all or most" of them in 36 hours. She then locked herself in the bathroom with Jayden and refused to turn the child over to his father, Kevin Federline. An ambulance was called and Britney ended up hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center.

See pics of celebrity court appearances

On the night of Jan. 28, Schleimer recounted, they had been returning to her home to meet with a doctor when Britney jumped out of the car inside her gated community and plopped down on the sidewalk, holding her dog. Schleimer showed a paparazzo's video of the incident to the court.

John Travolta recently had a defamation case go his way

When Britney's parents showed up at the house after seeing the media coverage, Jamie threatened to "beat the hell out of" Lutfi if he didn't get out of his daughter's life and punched him in the stomach, Schleimer said.

Britney was again transported to the hospital in the wee hours of Jan. 31 and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold. Lutfi was initially denied entry into the waiting area, but was ultimately allowed in at around 2:30 a.m.

"My client has never been paid for serving as her manager," the lawyer concluded. "He was made famous as the guy who drugged Britney Spears and put her in the hospital. The evidence will show the defendants ruined my client's reputation."

The Art of Love: Relationships Are Matters of the Heart | Trinity UMC

Do you like country music?

Are you a country music fan?? Back in the 90s when grunge ruled the rock and roll radio stations, I too, was a country fan.? Mary Chapin Carpenter was one of my favorites along with Colin Raye and Allison Krauss.? What have been some of your favorite country songs? ? ?There is the old joke about country music.? If you play a country song backwards, ?you get your truck back, your dog back, your job back, and your wife back. We laugh, but years ago, Chicago Lutheran pastor Bruce Cole used to be a DJ on a country and western station. His call-in show greeted every caller with these words: Are You Crying, Laughing, Loving or Leaving? Is it any wonder country and western music has become our nation?s #1 music with songs like Here?s A Quarter?Call Someone Who Cares?

What makes country music so popular with such a broad cross section of people?? One of the reasons that country music is so popular, is that it deals with real issues.? We all have difficulties in our relationships.? We have all had our hearts broken by someone we love.? We have all been disappointed.? We have all been happy as a NASCAR fan on race day.? We all have times when we feel lower than low.? Country music captures all those emotions, the good ones and the bad ones.? I have also noticed that often, country music has a cynical bent to it. Country music is infamous for the songs they have about substance abuse, rain, cheating, and death.?Who else sings about stuff like this?? I remember Barbra Mandrel?s song, ?Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.?? And today we have Carrie Underwood reminding men why they should remain faithful with her song, ?Before He Cheats.?

That?s why we like country music.? We have a touch of cynical in us.? Is that how we are created to be though?? In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul encouraged the church to think on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and praiseworthy (see Philippians 4:8). But our cynical culture makes it hard to focus on these things, doesn?t it? All we have to do is open our email or our Facebook page or watch TV to see tons of cynical and sometimes just negative and hateful things.? That is one reason it has been so nice this week thinking about the positive things in life.? Last week we named things that we love about this church.? This week, I invited you to think about people who have made an impact on your spiritual life.? We got to write about people that we love and why they matter to us.? This week we got to do the opposite of the culture.? We can focus on those that we love and the impact they have made in a positive way in our lives.? There are two short scripture verses that go perfectly along with loving and appreciating those people in our lives. From the great Shema of the Torah in Deuteronomy to the teaching of Jesus found in John 13, this focus on loving relationship is at the root of the scriptural values of our faith.

Deuteronomy 6:4-6. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. (NRSV)

John 13:34-35. ?I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other.? (CEB)

In the Christian faith, we pay attention to the teaching of the Shema in the context of the teaching of Jesus. One of the ways we express our love for God is through our love for one another. This is a clear expectation of our faith. Do you find this difficult sometimes?? Loving other people isn?t always easy.? Sometimes people we love do things that drive us absolutely crazy. ?They push our buttons.? They know just how to hurt us.? What are some obstacles you have seen or experienced to a healthy or loving relationship?

The Bible tells us much about love and relationships.? Our two scripture lessons for this morning are a good reminder of what a loving relationship is supposed to be like.? Love God with all your heart, soul, and strength.? And then love one another.? In fact Jesus says that people should know we are Christians by the way we love one another.? Let?s look for a moment at these scriptures and figure out how they can apply to us this morning in Red Springs in 2012.

The Jews say that the Ten Commandments and the Shema should be taught to children from their earliest days and fixed on the door of every house.? You can tell a Jewish person, at least one who practices Judaism, when they have a mezuzah on their doorpost.? [Pass one around.]? Orthodox Jewish men wear the phylacteries or small leather pouches with the scripture written on small scrolls on their foreheads.? That would certainly be a way to always remember God?s word and how to act in the world.? That is certainly a way to remember to put our words of scripture into action.

In fact, faithful Jews recite this exact passage from Deuteronomy every day.? Yes, every day, multiple times a day and at the very least first thing in the morning and last thing at night.? Israel is told to HEAR and then to LOVE God.? This is a defining relationship for Jews and for us as Christians.? God delivered us from slavery.? God loves us before we even know God.? God saved us from ourselves.? As a result, we are to love God and love our neighbor.? This isn?t the feeling love that my family has for frozen yogurt.? It isn?t the love we feel for our first boyfriend or girlfriend.? It isn?t the love we have for our favorite ball team.? This love is total commitment.? It?s like that quote from Talladega Nights:? The Legend of Ricky Bobby.? ?If you?re not first, you?re last.?? If God isn?t first, then you?re last.? If you don?t love God and God only, then you aren?t following God?s commands properly.? If money is more important than God, if our relationships are more important than God, if our job is more important than God, then it is time to consider what is getting between us and God.? God has been loyal to us, so therefore, we must be loyal to God with our whole person. In the original Hebrew, we are to love God with our me?od or ?muchness? with our whole heart, mind, and soul.?? That is why Jewish people say this prayer every morning and every evening and have these words written and stuck on the doorpost of their houses.? A Jewish writer explains it this way, ?Thus the Shema is the last greeting and admonition to those who leave the house; may their lives be guided by its ideals. The Shema is man?s first welcome home; may he place his home, and his thoughts and actions within it, under the instruction of God?s Torah.?? We are invited to love God with all we?ve got.

We have all probably had people in our lives that have been reminders of God?s presence or pointed us closer to God?s presence.? We have had people in our lives that help us love God with all we?ve got.? Who has been that person for you and why?? Who has made an impact on your spiritual journey?? [Input]

These people have helped us love God and love our neighbor.? That is what Jesus is talking about in our Gospel scripture.? When Jesus speaks these words, he had just washed his Disciple?s feet.? What an eye opening experience that must have been for the Disciples.? Their leader stooped as low as a servant and touched their dirty, stinky, nasty feet.? Then this servant leader commands them to love one another.? No wonder it is written down for us to read today.

This instruction to love echoes the words of the schema and Torah.? What is new in what he says is that the command to love comes from the life of Jesus.? Jesus? followers are asked to enter into the love the God and Jesus share.? That radical love is what will set them apart and make others notice them.? Keeping this commandment will be a mark of discipleship because it is an outward and visible sign of the Disciples? love for Jesus.? Love is a reciprocal thing.? Jesus loves the Disciples and the Disciples love him back.? Jesus loves us and we love him back.? Jesus showed just how much he loved us by sacrificing himself for our sins.? What can we do in response??? We cannot hang on a cross.? We cannot usually lay our life down for a friend.? However, we can love one another.? If we had to leap tall buildings in a single bound, it might be easier some times.? To be the Church in the world, we have to love one another like God loves us.? We have to live lives full of extravagant generosity.

I read this snippet in a book this week that talks about how we live into the extravagant generosity of loving one another.? ?Every sanctuary and chapel in which we have worshiped, every church organ that has lifted our spirits, every pew where we have sat, every Communion rail where we have knelt, every hymnal from which we have sung, every praise band that has touched our hearts, every church classroom where we have gathered with our friends, every church kitchen that has prepared our meals, every church van that has taken us to camp, every church camp cabin where we have slept?they are all are the fruit of someone?s Extravagant Generosity.

We have been the recipients of grace upon grace. We are the heirs, the beneficiaries of those who came before us who were touched by the generosity of Christ enough to give graciously so that we could experience the truth of Christ for ourselves. We owe the same to generations to come. We have worshiped in sanctuaries that we did not build, so to us falls the privilege of building sanctuaries where we shall never worship.? (pp. 41?42).? How we treat this space matters.? How we bring others along in the faith matters.? How often we bring our children to church and to Sunday school matters.? Who we impact for Christ matters.

Studies show that the most people can name between five and eight people who?ve made an impact on their lives ? people who came into their lives at different times and influenced them in profound ways.? Mentoring isn?t just a one-on-one relationship.? We create webs of mentors across our lifetimes and bring others we mentor into the web or relationships.

We need to have relationships like these in our church and provide opportunities for people of all ages to interact and form teaching and mentoring relationships.?This week we celebrated people we love in the church. We have named the people who have made a spiritual impact on our lives. How can we express our appreciation of these gifts of grace this week? How can we pass that grace onto someone else?? How can we let these people know that what they did mattered to us?? And if that person is already in heaven, let?s think about who we could impact in a similar way.? Who could you mentor?? Find a way this week to say I love you to your family members as well. ??This church does not have to live like a country song.? We don?t have to focus on the negative and we don?t have to have a trail of broken relationships in our lives.? We have a relationship with Jesus Christ, so we base all our other relationships on that relationship of love and extravagant generosity.

Next time we get together, we will explore what we would most like to see happen in our church in the coming year. I invite you to consider what your greatest hope and best vision for God work through this congregation could be.? Where is God calling us to be living into this extravagant love He has for us?

Ozone affects forest watersheds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? U.S. Forest Service and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) scientists have found that rising levels of ozone, a greenhouse gas, may amplify the impacts of higher temperatures and reduce streamflow from forests to rivers, streams, and other water bodies. Such effects could potentially reduce water supplies available to support forest ecosystems and people in the southeastern United States.

Impacts of ozone, a global scale pollutant, on forests are not well understood at a large scale. This modeling study indicates that current and projected increases in ozone in the 21st century will likely enhance the negative effects of warming on watersheds, aggravating drought and altering stream flow. Using data on atmospheric water supply and demand and statistical models, researchers with the Forest Service and ORNL were able to show what effects ozone can have on stream flow in dry seasons. Published in the November issue of the journal Global Change Biology, the study suggests that ozone has amplified the effects of warmer temperatures in reducing streamflow in forested watersheds in the southeastern United States.

"From previous studies, we know a lot about ozone's influences on crops and leaves of young trees. However, no studies have investigated the impacts of ozone on water flow in large forested watersheds," says Ge Sun, research hydrologist with the Forest Service Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center "Our studies show that ozone has a possible connection in the reduction of streamflow in late summer when flow is generally lowest, particularly in areas with high ozone levels such as the Appalachian Mountains in the Southeast."

Researchers developed models based on 18 to 26 years of data and observed streamflow in response to climate and atmospheric chemistry during the growing season. The research team evaluated individual and interactive effects of ozone on late season streamflow for six southeastern forested watersheds ranging in size from 38 acres to more than 3,700 square miles. Estimates of ozone's influence on streamflow ranged from 7 percent in the area of lowest ozone in West Virginia to 23 percent in the areas of highest exposure in Tennessee.

The findings from this study along with a wide range of previous field studies challenge assumptions derived from small controlled studies that ozone exposure reduces water loss from trees and forests. The present study of mature forests under moderate ozone exposure shows however those ecosystems may react in a different way than can be predicted by short-range, intensive studies.

"We're predicting that forests under high ozone conditions will use more water instead of less, as was previously assumed," says Samuel "Sandy" McLaughlin, scientist emeritus from the ORNL Environmental Sciences Division. "The concern is that ozone-induced increases in plant water loss could aggravate drought impacts on forests, and reduce the water available for people and stream life dependent on water flow during the dry seasons."

Forest Service and ORNL scientists also collaborated with researchers from the University of Virginia, Lamont Doherty Observatory, and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
