Insects Rapidly Becoming Resistant To GM Corn

Organic gardeners saw this coming from the get-go - I remember a Mike McGrath (then editor in chief of Organic Gardening) editorial predicting it. Heck, we'd already seen this happen with badly managed organic farms - back in the 1990s, resistance had been seen in Diamondback moths on Hawaiian farms that sprayed B.t kurstaki repeatedly rather than just when monitoring indicated a need for spraying.

The continued usefulness of organic/botanical pesticides has, in large part, been due to their lack of persistence in the environment. Inserting those genes into plants is basically making the pesticides persistent, which (obviously) leads to much quicker development of resistance on the part of the pests.

The part of me that's a cynic wonders if this is what Monsanto had in mind all along... one less organic competitor to their stable of proprietary chemicals.

Wi-Fi sucks. Well, it sucks if your router is lurking in a subterranean realm of your apartment and your gaming rig is located aboveground with an iron staircase in between the two and you don't want to run 100 meters of cable or wire the apartment with ethernet because you don't own the building. Halliburton And Schlumberger Will Benefit From An Increase In Oil Majors' Capital Expenditures

Recently, TheStreet.com dubbed Halliburton (HAL) 'The Most Mispriced Energy Stock of 2011.' The article blames a "Macondo overhang,...fears of pricing weakness,...and a [projected] BRIC slowdown" in 2012 for the underperformance of Halliburton's shares. These concerns seem largely overblown. As for the Macondo issue, there is certainly a real risk that Halliburton may be forced into a large settlement, but S&P does not believe a ruling on the matter is imminent. Regarding a slowdown in the BRIC countries, the article notes that Argus Research believes a review of big oil's capital expenditure plans should be enough to dispel the notion that an economic slowdown in China or Brazil will derail oilfield service companies in 2012.

This is consistent with S&P's outlook for the oil and gas equipment and services sub-industry. In its stock report on Halliburton, S&P says it expects "higher upstream capex...combined with higher global demand" in the coming year. There are multiple examples of big oil's plan to increase spending in 2012. On December 2, Conoco Phillips (COP) announced it was increasing 2012 planned capex to $15.5 billion from a previous estimate of around $14.5 billion. The new estimate represents a 15% increase from 2011. In a sign of how the industry is recovering since oil prices crashed to around $30 in the wake of 2008's financial crisis, Conoco's 2012 spending plan "mark[s] a return to the level of investment the company had before 2009, when it slashed its spending plans by 40%" according to the Wall Street Journal.

Also, Conoco said "the bulk of [its] exploration and production capital program will be spent in North America," where Halliburton maintains a leadership position. Chevron (CVX) also plans to increase capex in 2012. The second-largest U.S. oil company said it expects to increase spending by 17% next year to $32.7 billion, a record for the company, while Exxon (XOM), the largest U.S. oil company, is expected to increase spending by 5% next year according to MarketWatch.

Going forward, the European situation poses a significant risk for oil companies. Should the ECB's Long Term Refinancing Operations fail to spur investment in distressed sovereign debt, Italy and Spain could find themselves unable to access the bond market, causing them to seek a bailout from the IMF. This would likely spark a recession in Europe that could be deep enough to cause significant demand destruction for oil, thus putting downward pressure on prices. Thus far, Europe has navigated the crisis reasonably well--to date, the region's leaders have managed to avert a 'Lehman event'. The likely scenario is that Europe will manage to limp through the crisis without anything going disastrously wrong.

Additionally, geopolitical factors, such as Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, should counterbalance recessionary fears in Europe. Furthermore, Forbes notes that JP Morgan's commodities research team is predicting that "as a result of producers rebalancing supply and demand," oil prices should remain resilient in 2012, while "past recessions and the price movement of oil [indicate] the floor [for Brent] seems to be in the $80 to $95 a barrel range." The aforementioned Forbes article cites JP Morgan as predicting a 2012 average of $115 for Brent. This bodes well for oil field services companies as "oil and gas companies in aggregate [are] basing 2012 capital spending budgets on an average oil price of $87 WTI and $98 Brent," according to Barclays. This means prices have some leeway to drop before the capex budgets of the oil majors would be affected.

Given that increased capex expenditures should support oilfield service companies in 2012, the question remains: Why Halliburton and not Schlumberger (SLB)? For starters, Halliburton maintains a leadership position in North America. This is good in the current environment given that, according to Barclays, "supermajors will increase spending by 25% in North America [and only] 10% internationally"--Schlumberger derives nearly 73% of its income outside North America. Additionally, Schlumberger is more expensive in both absolute terms and in terms of its earnings multiple. Schlumberger trades for around 14 times forward earnings--shares of Halliburton trade hands for around 8.14 times analysts' consensus estimate of $4.15 for 2012.

Also, Halliburton's trailing twelve month price-to-sales and price-to-cash flow are well below Schlumberger's, and the two companies' trailing twelve month gross margins, operating margins and net profit margins are very similar. All-in-all then, both Schlumberger and Halliburton are poised to benefit from increased capex by oil and gas companies in 2012, but Halliburton seems to be a better value from a valuation perspective. Now seems like a good time to buy, with HAL shares trading around $34.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in HAL, SLB over the next 72 hours.

Florida Panthers Future on Display as World Juniors Opens Monday

HuberdeauAs much fun as Panthers management is having watching their team lead the Southeast Division and compete for their first playoff berth since 2000, they really can't wait for their future.

A good number of players who will likely star for the Panthers in the coming years will be on display starting Monday in the World Junior Hockey Championships being held in Alberta.?

?This has always been the plan,'' assistant general manager Mike Santos said. ?I'm glad we're having success this year and a lot of that comes from the players we signed last summer. But the plan is to draft well and then develop them. And that comes by not rushing them, leaving them in college or junior hockey. We don't want to rush players into the NHL.

"This is still a three, four year plan. We think we have a real good organization, especially when those players are developed.''?

Florida has five players competing for the United States and Canada alone. All five of those players ? led by Canada's Jonathan Huberdeau and Quinton Howden as well as center Nick Bjugstad of Team USA ? could be on the Panthers roster within the next two seasons.

The Panthers have a total of seven top prospects competing in the 10 day tournament. Erik Gudbranson would have played for Canada as well, only he's played in 27 ?games with the Panthers.?

?If you have seven guys in that tournament, it means your scouts did a pretty good job,'' general manager Dale Tallon said. ?Our future looks very bright. These are all very good players who are playing on the world stage. This is good for them. It's a tough tournament to play in and it's tough to make these teams. We're real pleased with the development process and our depth chart.''

One player the Panthers have extreme interest in watching is Bjugstad, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. Florida took the 6-4 center with the 19th overall pick in 2010 and are expecting him to become a top two line player for the Panthers in the next couple of seasons.?

Bjugstad, 19, has 16 goals and 11 assists for the Gophers this season but has been slowed by an undisclosed injury and missed the first two exhibition games for Team USA leading into Monday's opening game against Denmark. Bjugstad is expected to be paired with Minnesota linemate Kyle Rau ? whom Florida took in 2011.?

?There are decisions we have to make, but things are going according to plan,'' Santos said. ?A lot of the guys here are going to be with us in the next couple?of years.''

Florida fans may have the most interest in watching is Huberdeau, the third overall pick in the 2011 draft.
Huberdeau, 18, led the Panthers in scoring during the preseason ? although to be fair, he played in more games than most of the regulars.?

Florida management said Huberdeau played well enough to make the Panthers out of training camp this summer, but they sent him back to his junior team in Quebec for not only more seasoning but physical maturity.

Huberdeau has missed time this season with a broken foot but has been medically cleared to play.?

"I didn't feel any pain in my foot, so it was great," Huberdeau told the Edmonton Journal. "I think just to be back with the team and that I played one game in six weeks, I think it was really good to just play. I think I'll get better every day, every game I play."

Howden missed all of Panthers training camp after suffering a concussion in a rookie game against Nashville and has been out after having similar symptoms after being hit by Team Canada teammate Brett Connolly during a scrimmage. Like Huberdeau, Howden has also been cleared to play.?

The Panthers don't plan on doing much scouting at the tournament since most of the players have already been drafted. Director of amateur scouting Scott Luce and a number of his scouts will be there, although Santos and Tallon don't plan on attending.

?It's more of a place to be seen than anything else,'' Santos said.?

That doesn't mean Tallon and Santos won't be watching. The tournament is now televised in the U.S. on NHL Network where in years past, the tournament could only be seen in Canada ? where it is as revered as the NCAA basketball tournament is in the states.?

Russia pulled off the upset in last year's finals by beating host Canada. Russia, Canada, the United States and Finland are the favorites this season.

?These are the best kids in North America,'' Tallon said. ?We have a bright future and a good core. Our fans should be excited about what's coming. You talk and talk about your prospects but until you see them in action, fans don't know. But they should be excited to know the kind of players we have.''

Amid NKorea mourning, vows to support new leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Mourning centers have been set up in towns and villages across North Korea in a stepped-up show of public grief Friday over the death of leader Kim Jong Il, but attention and allegiances were already clearly shifting to his young son.

Scenes of dramatic mass mourning have been a daily occurrence in Pyongyang since Kim's death was announced on Monday. Thousands of North Koreans ? including heir Kim Jong Un and other top officials ? have poured into a funeral palace in the capital to view his body or bow before his portrait.

By Friday, mourning stations had also been established in provincial, city and county seats, and at institutions and enterprises across the country.

"The sorrow at the loss of our leader is tremendous. But we would not stay in grief only," Sok Kil Nam, a 24-year-old worker at the Chollima Steel Complex in the city of Nampho, told The Associated Press. He added: "As long as we have great comrade Kim Jong Un, the cause of the respected General Kim Jong Il will go on, so we continue working, not leaving our work sites."

North Korea's official media have been quick to feature the younger Kim in coverage of the mourning ? a strong indication that the country's leadership is behind installing the 20-something son as Kim Jong Il's successor and the public face of the nation.

Officials in Seoul and Washington, after initial jitters over possible instability, are calling the transition so far a smooth one. There have been no outward signs of unrest on the streets or unusual troop movements along the borders.

"We continue to monitor and assess the situation and continue normal operations for stability and security in the region," said Cmdr. Ron Steiner, a spokesman for the U.S. 7th Fleet, which is based in Japan.

The North, however, remains highly sensitive to what it sees as outside threats.

One North Korean media outlet known for being particularly strident in its commentary slammed South Korea for putting its military on a heightened alert level after Kim's death, calling it an "insult" that derides the dignity of a nation in mourning.

The government-run website, Uriminzokkiri, also said the fate of the relations between the two Koreas depends on how the South deals with requests from its civilians to visit the North to pay respects to Kim.

"We are watching the attitude of the South Korean government," it said.

It said Pyongyang will accept anyone from South Korea hoping to pay respects to Kim Jong Il and that routes by both air and land will be opened. North Korea has said through its other media that foreign delegations would not be allowed in to attend the official funeral for Kim on Dec. 28-29.

Keenly aware of the sensitivities, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has sought to assure Pyongyang that his country was "not hostile," despite putting its front-line troops on alert since Kim's death was announced. On Friday, the presidential Blue House announced it had lifted an emergency mode for all government workers except those involved in security and foreign affairs.

Even so, South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said his government remains "firm" in its position not to allow civilians to visit North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except the bereaved families of former President Kim Dae-jung and former Hyundai Asan chairman Chung Mong-hun.

Kim met with Kim Jong Il in 2000 in Pyongyang in the first summit meeting between the two Koreas. Chung led a joint tourism project with North Korea that yielded much-sought hard currency for Pyongyang until its suspension in 2008.

In a parliamentary hearing, South Korean Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik said Seoul is open to dialogue with the North, if that would be constructive.

"I hope the emergence of the new leader will lead North Korea to move in the right direction and enhance the livelihoods of the North Korean people," Yu said.

Asked if Seoul considers Kim Jong Un as successor to Kim Jong Il, Yu only said his government is "closely monitoring the issue."

Communication between the United States and North Korea also still appears open as the North continues its official 11-day mourning period. But the State Department said it wasn't expecting any meeting with the North Koreans this week, and little contact before the mourning period ends Dec. 29.

In a strong endorsement of the young Kim, the North's main newspaper Rodong Sinmun has urged the country to "rally, rally and rally behind great comrade Kim Jong Un and faithfully uphold his leadership."

It called him "the outstanding leader of our party, military and people and a great successor."

South Korea's intelligence agency has told Parliament members that an ad hoc committee in which Kim Jong Un is a vice chairman is expected to handle key state affairs before he formally becomes the country's leader.

The agency predicts Kim Jong Un's aunt Kim Kyong Hui, a key Workers' Party official, and Jang Song Thaek, her husband and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, will play larger roles supporting the heir, according to a lawmaker who spoke to the AP.

Eagles among several teams still in playoff chase (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? The Philadelphia Eagles should ditch those pregame "Rocky" videos for another Sylvester Stallone movie that sums up their season.

Given up for dead just a few weeks ago along with several other teams, the underachieving Eagles are somehow still in the NFL playoff race. So instead of showing inspirational clips of Rocky Balboa fighting Apollo Creed, maybe it would be more fitting to have a video montage from the "Saturday Night Fever" sequel directed by Stallone, "Staying Alive."

With two weeks left in the regular season, 15 teams are in the hunt for the five remaining playoff spots. There are seven teams battling for two openings in the AFC and eight teams in contention for three berths in the NFC.

Four division titles are still up for grabs. The wackiest races are in the AFC West and NFC East, where 8-8 might be enough to win either division.

Green Bay, San Francisco, New Orleans, New England, Houston, Baltimore and Pittsburgh have clinched playoff spots. Dallas (8-6), Atlanta (9-5), Detroit (9-5), Denver (8-6) and the New York Jets (8-6) and Giants (7-7) control their own destiny.

Philadelphia (6-8), Chicago (7-7), Arizona (7-7), Seattle (7-7), Tennessee (7-7), Cincinnati (7-7), Oakland (7-7), San Diego (7-7) and Kansas City (6-8) all need to win and get help to play beyond New Year's Day.

The fact that the Eagles haven't been mathematically eliminated yet is perhaps most surprising. A team that many picked to reach the Super Bowl started 1-4 and was 4-8 following consecutive lopsided losses to the Patriots and Seahawks.

But two straight wins over Miami and the Jets coupled with losses by Dallas and the Giants kept Philadelphia alive. Now it wouldn't even take big upsets for the Eagles to win the NFC Least, er, East.

First, the Jets have to beat the Giants in the battle of North Jersey on Saturday. Then, later that afternoon, the Eagles must beat Dallas. The Jets are 3-point favorites over the Giants. The Eagles are just 3-point underdogs, and they whipped the Cowboys 34-7 on Oct. 30.

If that happens, the Eagles would win the division for the second straight year if they beat Washington at home on Jan. 1 and the Giants beat Dallas in the Meadowlands. The Giants already defeated the Cowboys on the road last week.

"You can't control all that," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "The thing you can control is going out there (Tuesday) and practicing, and Wednesday practicing, and Thursday practicing, and Friday, and playing the game. Those are the things that you can control. So take care of that business. I tell myself the same thing, take care of that business, don't worry about the other things. Take care of what you can control."

Two other NFC teams that seemed to be going nowhere have revived their hopes in recent weeks. Though the 49ers (11-3) wrapped up the NFC West by midseason, the Cardinals and Seahawks never quit. Arizona has won six of seven and Seattle has won five of six to overcome awful first halves. Both teams are fighting for the two wild-card spots, but need the Falcons and Lions to lose.

"The guys stick together and they support each other," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "That's a big step in becoming a good football team."

Out in the AFC West, all four teams have a chance to claim first place. The Fighting Tebows, (aka Denver Broncos) have the inside track. But Oakland and San Diego are just one game behind, and Kansas City kept its faint hopes alive with a stunning upset over previously unbeaten Green Bay.

Led by Tim Tebow, the Broncos won seven of eight to overcome a 1-4 start before losing to New England. They are hoping to avoid another December nosedive and end a five-year playoff drought.

"I definitely feel like we're all right," Tebow said. "We're excited about where we're at, and we're going to continue to be positive and stay motivated and just try to improve."

The Chiefs were looking to next year when they fired coach Todd Haley a week ago. But interim coach Romeo Crennel put together a game plan that finally stopped Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, who had won 19 in a row, including the Super Bowl.

Kansas City still needs to beat the Raiders on Saturday, have Denver lose to Buffalo and San Diego drop one of its last two games. If all that happens, the Chiefs will play for a spot in the playoffs at Denver in their regular-season finale.

"We were able to win and we feel good about getting the victory, but we know the season lies in the next game," Crennel said. "We have to win this next one, and it's a short week. We're looking forward to that, trying to keep this thing moving. We're in the race and we have a chance."

The Titans missed an opportunity to grab control of the final wild-card spot in the AFC when they became the first team to lose to the lowly Indianapolis Colts (1-13). But Tennessee isn't making vacation plans yet and continues to seek its first playoff berth since 2008.

"We don't have control anymore," rookie defensive tackle Jurrell Casey said after the loss to the Colts. "We'll have to see how some other teams do, and we'll see how it all plays out. We can't go out there and just give up."

As the old Bee Gees' song from the "Staying Alive" prequel "Saturday Night Fever" goes:

    "Stayin' alive.

    Stayin' alive.

    Ah, ha, ha, ha,

    Stayin' alive."

Instant view: Oracle software, hardware results disappoint (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Oracle Corp fell well short of Wall Street's expectations on both hardware and software sales in its fiscal second quarter, wiping more than 8 percent off its shares.

    Commentary:

MICHAEL NEMEROFF, ANALYST, MORGAN KEEGAN & CO

"The licensing revenue came in lower than expectations and that really drives most of the profitability at the company. That obviously is a disappointment.

"We need to figure out where the miss occurred geographically, because we suspect Europe might be the culprit, given their large exposure to Europe.

"Oracle has been doing well over the last couple of quarters so clearly this is not a fantastic signal to the markets.

"I would caution people not to make any grand generalizations about the health of the tech sector, because Oracle's quarter ended in November and Europe has been so volatile. The last couple of days in November could have been very weak in Europe, which could have caused a miss.

"Currency is a big negative for Oracle when the euro has gone down as quickly as it has over the last couple of months. That's a huge drag on their earnings and so we need to figure out what the currency impact is."

PETER GOLDMACHER, ANALYST, COWEN & CO

"Oracle has been amazingly consistent with their earnings. When they miss, it means people are re-thinking enterprise spending.

"Tech spending is more under pressure than people thought. IT budgets have been relatively flat, when you have issues like you do in Europe, people naturally pull back.

"Oracle is still the best horse in the glue factory, it's a well-run company, they will weather this better than other companies.

"Tech spending is going to be under pressure for a long time. Oracle is a solid core technology company but they are not in new growth areas such as software as a service, virtualization."

U.S. Cellular updating original Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5

    Galaxy Tab

It might not be the belle of the ball any longer, but U.S. Cellular has approved an update for  the original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, bringing it some Gingerbread live in the form of Android version 2.3.5.  While it's not Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich, it is a vast improvement over the Froyo (Android 2.2) build the Tab shipped with, and should breathe new life into your faithful electronic companion.  Besides the advantages of Gingerbread itself, the change log has a few nice bullet points:

    • VPN support
    • Improved volume control when playing a video or movie while listening with a headset
    • Google security patches:  DigiNotar certificate revocation; Libpng security update
    • Remove auto accept of Bluetooth paring for Handsfree Profile (HFP). This vulnerability allows a nearby third-party to auto connect to Bluetooth HFP and potentially access contact data on the mobile device.

Now, for the bad news.  The update is not an Over The Air (OTA) style affair, and must be done via the USB cable and a Windows computer.  This means that it's going to wipe away the data on your Tab, and of course involves software and driver installation on a PC.  Samsung has set up a nice support page for the issues that are bound to crop up, and of course the Android Central forums are full of people who can help -- don't be afraid to hit them up.  Check out the links if you're needing to update.

    Thanks, Mark!

Mexico to issue findings in U.S. chicken dispute (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Mexico expects to issue preliminary findings in an anti-dumping investigation into chicken imports from the United States toward the end of the month, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

In late January, Mexico announced the investigation into chicken leg and thigh imports from the United States, Mexico's top trading partner, following complaints by domestic chicken processors alleging unfair trade practices.

"We're just about to publish our preliminary findings," Victor Aguilar, an official with the economy ministry, told Reuters in an interview.

He said officials were working on publishing the findings by the end of the year, possibly in the last week of December.

These could trigger anti-dumping tariffs on U.S. imports, but Aguilar declined to say whether this was likely.

Mexican producers have argued since 2007 that below-cost chicken leg and thigh imports from the United States have increased substantially, eating up a larger share of the local market.

In the interview, Aguilar said Mexican producers had made a well-founded case of damage to the national industry.

He also confirmed that Mexican producers and U.S. exporters are negotiating a possible deal to end the dispute.

The head of the major U.S. poultry trade association dismissed the allegation of unfair trade practices.

"It is truly without merit. The (U.S.) industry is definitely not dumping," Jim Sumner, president of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Export Council, said in a separate interview conducted by telephone.

"We have submitted a settlement proposal that we feel would address any concerns and also help resolve this issue for both sides," he said.

The proposal would hold U.S. exports to Mexico at 2010 levels. Sumner said it was supported by the U.S. and Mexican poultry industries.

Mexican imports of U.S. chicken surged nearly 18 percent in 2010 to 980 million pounds (445 million kilograms), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and totaled 855 million pounds (388 million kilograms) in the first 10 months of 2011.

According to the Mexican government, the amount of chicken leg and thigh imports from the United States in dispute is 570 million pounds (260 million kilograms).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture had no comment.

    More Like Reagan?

Gingrich represents a much more serious challenge to Romney than Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, or Rick Perry ever did. When other candidates challenged Romney, his advisers could say that he still held the two trump cards. He was the candidate voters thought could handle economic issues?their No. 1 concern?and he was the candidate they considered most likely to beat Barack Obama. Not so much anymore. When asked which candidate can better turn around the economy, Gingrich wins 22 percent of the support and Romney 20 percent. The electability question is less clear, but still not a clean win for Romney. In the Des Moines Register poll, when people were asked which candidate was more electable, Romney got 38 percent to Gingrich?s weak 22 percent.? But in the Marist poll, 38 percent of those whose key concern was beating President Obama picked Gingrich, compared with 25 percent who supported Romney.

Senators call for full review of Pakistani ties (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Two senior Republican senators called on Monday for a thorough review of U.S. relations with Pakistan, declaring that all security and economic aid to Islamabad must be reconsidered.

John McCain and Lindsey Graham -- influential members of the Senate Armed Services committee -- said Washington had to be realistic about the deteriorating relationship.

They said actions of Pakistan's military, such as its support for militant groups, were harming U.S. forces and threatening American security.

"The time has come for the United States to fully review its relations with Pakistan," McCain and Graham said in a statement. "In particular, all options regarding U.S. security and economic assistance to Pakistan must be on the table, including substantial reductions and stricter standards for performance."

McCain was the Republican party's candidate in the 2008 presidential election won by Democrat Barack Obama.

The United States has allocated some $20 billion in security and economic aid to Pakistan since 2001, much of it in the form of reimbursements for assistance in fighting militants.

A November 26 NATO air strike that killed 24 Pakistani troops on the border with Afghanistan has provoked the latest crisis in relations between the two nations. Relations were already frayed after the secret U.S. raid in May that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani town.

The frustration with Pakistan expressed by McCain and Graham is widespread on Capitol Hill.

This year committees in both the House and Senate have voted in favor of making economic as well as security aid to Islamabad conditional on its cooperation in fighting militants such as the Haqqani network, which Washington blamed for an attack on its embassy in Kabul in September.

Final decisions on U.S. aid for 2012 may be made in the coming weeks as Congress tries to finish its appropriations bills for 2012.

Zynga seeks lower IPO value in tough market (Reuters)

(Reuters)- Zynga Inc is seeking a more modest valuation than Wall Street expected for its initial public offering, hoping to attract investors after a series of Internet stocks fell below their IPO price in recent weeks.

The social games maker, known for Facebook games like "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars," plans to sell 100 million new shares between $8.50 and $10 each, which will raise $925 million based on the midpoint of the range, according to a regulatory filing on Friday.

The deal values Zynga at as much as $9.04 billion, about a third less than the $14.05 billion valuation that the company cited in a filing two weeks ago.

"Given what's transpired in the markets over the several months and overall macro uncertainty, it seems like Zynga is trying to take a practical and prudent approach to the deal to make it seem more appetizing to investors," said Robert W. Baird & Co analyst Colin Sebastian.

Shares of high-profile Internet companies such as Groupon Inc and Pandora Media Inc have crashed below their IPO price, casting a shadow over other Web startups hoping to tap public markets.

At $925 million, Zynga's IPO would still be the largest from a U.S. Internet company since Google Inc raised $1.7 billion in 2004. Zynga is selling 11.1 percent of diluted shares in the offering.

The IPO has been hotly anticipated because it would be the first chance for most investors to get a piece of Facebook's growth, since the vast majority of Zynga's games are played on the social network. Facebook plans to go public in 2012.

But analysts say Facebook's user growth is slowing, and that has a knock-on impact on Zynga.

"The exponential growth with Facebook gaming we saw in the last two years is not going to happen and is definitely slowing," said Interpret analyst Michael Cai.

A Zynga spokesman declined to comment the IPO.

    GROWTH CONCERNS

With more than 260 million monthly active users, Zynga publishes free games and makes money from selling virtual items -- such as tractors and weapons -- that players then use in games.

On average, less than 3 percent of Zynga's players pay for its games, according to M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon. "It remains to be seen how sustainable Zynga is with their conversion rate so small," he said.

The company is profitable, unlike Groupon and Pandora, but earnings are volatile because it has to spend on coming out with new games. Zynga reported a 43 percent drop in net income in the September quarter to $13 million, even as revenue jumped 80 percent to $301 million.

While Zynga's valuation has been cut from earlier estimates, Zynga would still be among the largest publicly traded U.S. game developers after it debuts on Nasdaq under the "ZNGA" ticker.

Video game developer Activision Blizzard Inc currently has the industry's highest market value, at $14.2 billion, followed by Electronic Arts Inc, at $7.7 billion.

Zynga Chief Executive Mark Pincus and Chief Financial Officer David Wehner will lead a roadshow to investors beginning Monday, with stops in cities including Chicago, Boston, New York, Denver and San Francisco.

Pincus, who started many companies before he founded Zynga, will hold a class of shares with 70 times more voting power than the common stock that will be sold in the offering.

Such concentrated voting power is rare and could put off investors, said Lise Buyer, founder of IPO advisory firm The Class V Group.

"Future shareholders should assume Zynga won't listen to them," Buyer said.

    HAUNTED MANSION

In a video for the roadshow posted on the Web, Zynga executives showed off items that players can pay for, such as an airstrike in a game that cost 50 cents and a haunted mansion for $7.

The company also has a "highroller" membership that cost $5 a month for fans of its casino games -- a subscription model, if it takes off, would offer steadier growth potential.

"There are a lot of areas of growth for Zynga and we are aggressively executing in each area," Chief Operating Officer John Schappert said in the video.

To find new users, the company is focused on bringing its games to smart phones and tablets and away from Facebook, where it pays a 30 percent cut to have its games.

"Zynga rides on top of Facebook but Facebook is much larger and supports many other businesses besides Zynga like advertising shopping and search," said Pidgeon.

While Zynga was one of the first companies to build games for Facebook, it will be tougher to crack the mobile market, which is becoming crowded with deep-pocketed rivals from Walt Disney Co to Electronic Arts, analysts say.

Zynga aims to set its IPO price on December 15 and the stock is scheduled to trade on Dec 16.

Based on a fully diluted share count of 904 million, which includes existing shares and stock options, the IPO price values Zynga at $7.7 billion to $9.04 billion.

Pampered pandas flown into Scotland (Reuters)

EDINBURGH (Reuters) ? A pair of pampered giant pandas arrived in Scotland on Sunday to a reception of cheering and flag-waving crowds while British officials said the 10-year loan of the bears strengthened ties between the two countries.

Tian Tian and Yang Guang -- whose names in English are Sweetie and Sunshine -- arrived at Edinburgh airport after flying in from Chengdu, Sichuan province, and were later greeted at Edinburgh zoo by around 450 people waving Chinese and Scottish flags.

"Scotland's relationship with China is hugely important and the pandas represent a fantastic opportunity to deepen our business, cultural and diplomatic ties," said Scotland's Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Since the 1950s, China has given away pandas as gestures of goodwill in what has come to be known as "panda diplomacy."

Modern China gave its first pair of giant pandas to Britain in 1974.

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: "I know that a huge amount of work has gone into securing their loan and they will be a great showcase for UK-China links in science and research."

Afforded a reception worthy of a state visit, the bears' journey on a private plane was no less extravagant, with four crew members, two attendants, one veterinarian and a cargo handler among the retinue.

Ahead of the flight, veterinarian Tang Chunxiang said he was worried about the pandas' nerves and fear of flying.

"They might get air sick, they may get a bit dizzy on the plane," he said. "...if there is any problem, we have brought some simple medicine."

Visible through clear containers after being unloaded from the plane, the bears appeared nonplussed by the fanfair, one munching on food calmly as a photographer snapped away nearby.

The eight-year-old pair, raised at the Giant Panda Conservation and Research Centre in Ya'an, Sichuan, will become Britain's first pair of breeding pandas in 17 years.

Iain Valentine, director of conservation and research at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, was pleased that five years of negotiation with the Chinese authorities had finally paid off.

"This is the exciting bit, this is the bit I have been waiting for a very long time," he said.

Tian Tian and Yang Guang will not go on display at Edinburgh Zoo for at least a week, until they have settled into their new surrounds. They will remain there for 10 years, after which they, and any young they have, will be returned to China.

Edinburgh Zoo said that, as part of the loan deal, it would pay $1 million a year to China, 90 percent of which would pay for conservation and genetics research. The zoo will also have to find up to 70,000 pounds a year to provide around 18,000 kg (almost 20 tons) of bamboo shoots, most of which will come from a special nursery outside Amsterdam.

Considered a national treasure, the giant panda is seen as having come back from the brink of extinction, but remains under threat from logging, agriculture and rapid urbanisation.

There are an estimated 1,600 living wild in China, almost all in Sichuan. Around 300 are in captivity around the world, the vast majority of them inside China.

Pandas are notoriously difficult to breed because females ovulate only once a year and can only become pregnant during a two- or three-day period.

Meizu to launch first store outside mainland China, opening in Hong Kong this month

That's right, despite its short-lived battle with Apple last year, Meizu has finally decided it is time to make it out of China. Well, out of mainland China at least, as the company has chosen Hong Kong as its launch pad for entering the international market. In fact, back when we visited Meizu in Zhuhai late last year, its marketing director had already expressed interest in opening a flagship store in said city -- more so as a status symbol, if not for profit -- so we weren't really surprised by this news, but we're definitely happy for his gang.

Later this month, visitors of Mongkok will notice a brand new Meizu store pop up somewhere along Sai Yeung Choi Street (yes, that gadget street), where the upcoming dual-core, 4-inch 960 x 640 MX Android phone will also be sold starting in early January -- just a tad later than its mainland counterpart. What's more, the Hong Kong version will come with extra features such as Facebook, Google Mobile Services and various Android Market apps that are absent on the original MX. Prices and absolute date to be confirmed later this month, but either way, we have a feeling that we'll be seeing some long lines again around China, if not Hong Kong.

Meizu to launch first store outside mainland China, opening in Hong Kong this month originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 08:15:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Top budget travel destinations for 2012

    Courtesy of Filipe Pinheiro

The Azores lies 930 miles off the coast of Lisbon, but the distance hasn't protected the autonomous region of Portugal from the mainland's economic troubles -- which means big bargains for American travelers.

    By Nicole Frehsee, Budget Travel

Many sites put together their "best" travel lists for the coming year, but few do so with such a keen eye toward savings as we do. For Budget Travel, it's about more than just buzz (although that helps, too). Our editors comb through piles of data, news, currency charts and industry trends to find our nominees for the world's new best-value destinations ? then passionately debate which of the candidates will make the final list.

Slideshow: See the top budget travel destinations for?2012

As always, this year's winners have far more going for them than mere markdowns: Some are perennial, family-friendly favorites (San Diego, San Antonio); some are bucket-list standbys made suddenly affordable (Egypt, Athens); and some are overlooked underdogs ready for their turn in the global spotlight. What do they all have in common? The best time to see them is right now.

    Azores

Why in 2012: This chain of nine volcanic islands lies 930 miles off the coast of Lisbon, but the distance hasn't spared Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, from the mainland's economic troubles ? which means big bargains for American travelers. Hotel rates across Portugal have slid since 2010, with five-star hotel rooms averaging a mere $112 per night, and the Azores, which are dotted with baroque churches, black-sand beaches and crater lakes, are no exception. To lure visitors, Boston-based charter airline Azores Express is offering deeply discounted hotel-and-air packages through fall 2012 (508/677-0555, from $719). And while island-hopping had traditionally required a long ferry ride or a chartered fishing boat, last November, state-owned SATA Airlines shortened the trip when it increased inter-island flights.

Best time to visit: Azores weather is mild year-round, but outdoor enthusiasts will dig October, when temperatures typically hit 70 degrees and daylight lasts 11 hours. Since the month also marks the start of Azores's low season, which runs through May, hotels deals are easy to find then.

Where to stay: The coastal Bahia Palace Hotel on the island of S?o Miguel is steps from Baia de ?gua d'Alto beach and has a freshwater swimming pool and 101 rooms, all with ocean-view balconies (from $104).

Price check: In September, Azores-based SATA Airlines has nonstop tickets from Boston starting at $688 round-trip.

    Egypt

Why in 2012: Although (as of?when this was posted) the travel warning put in place by the United States after the Arab Spring has been downgraded to an alert for sporadic unrest, Egypt ? where tourism accounts for 11 percent of the economy ? is hurting for visitors, even at the nation's most famous destinations. Traveler numbers have plummeted by more than a third since 2010, and travel operators and hoteliers are cutting serious deals to encourage a turnaround. TUI, Europe's largest tour company, slashed $600 off the price of a recent Egyptian excursion, and average daily hotel rates have fallen 25 percent countrywide, dipping to about $107. There are deals at both the Great Pyramids of Giza, where room rates have slid 45 percent since 2010, and in the Red Sea resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, where prices slumped 26 percent to $104.

Best time to visit: Summer delivers 90-plus-degree temperatures and winter brings tourist throngs, but the shoulder seasons (March to May; September to November) promise fewer, and less-sweaty, crowds.

Where to stay: The five-star Savoy Sharm El Sheikh, at the foothills of the Sinai Mountains and steps away from Sharm El Sheikh's powdery, pristine White Knight Beach, is an accessible oasis. (savoy-sharm.com, from $143.)

Price check: Stopovers are a must when traveling to Egypt, as direct flights are pricey year-round (we're talking $1,000 plus). Dutch carrier KLM offers decent one-stop fares in March: Trips from New York to Cairo start at $815; tickets from Chicago go for $786; and prices from Los Angeles hover around $996 with two stops.

    San Diego

Why in 2012: With miles of picturesque Pacific coastline (perfect for surfing), only 10 inches of rain per year (ideal golf weather), and family-friendly attractions (Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, a LEGO-Land theme park), it's easy to see why San Diego is one of America's top 10 most-visited cities. And unlike northern neighbors Los Angeles and San Francisco, the SoCal city is offering bargains on everything from hotels ? the average nightly room rate is $128 ? to rental cars, which are 3 percent cheaper than they were in 2010. Another reason to book a trip now: Hotel prices are expected to continue dropping through 2012 before spiking again in 2013, thanks to an ongoing construction boom.

Best time to visit: The rainiest months are November through March, but even then you won't get soaked ? the highest average precipitation (in January) is only 2.3 inches. If you're a museum lover, visit in February, when San Diego Museum Month kicks off. Forty area attractions, such as the modern LUX Art Institute and the Birch Aquarium, will offer half-priced admission fees (sandiegomuseumcouncil.org, discount card free). Prime beach season runs from April to October, when the temperatures rarely dip below 69 degrees.

Where to stay: One of the city's newest boutique additions, Little Italy's Porto Vista exudes a laid-back, European vibe?(from $119). Most rooms have black-and-white, floor-to-ceiling photographs that evoke 1960s Italy ? think glammed-up fashion models and young men on scooters ? and the surrounding neighborhood is lined with sausage shops and old-school pizza joints.

Price check: February fares to San Diego are $156 from Portland (one stop on Spirit), $151 from Denver (nonstop on Frontier), and $339 from New York (nonstop on JetBlue).

    Maritime Canada

Why in 2012: The provinces lining Canada's eastern seaboard have always had plenty to offer the outdoorsy traveler ? from scenic kayak rides around Prince Edward Island to whale watching in the Bay of Fundy to wilderness hikes in the glacier-specked Torngat Mountains. But the region's biggest attraction this year only comes around once in a lifetime: the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking off the coast of Newfoundland. There's a full calendar of events in Halifax to commemorate the tragedy this April, including a town parade, concerts, and a film festival; the city's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is also expanding its permanent Titanic exhibit this year. Along with two other Atlantic coast cities (Charlottetown and Fredericton), Halifax once again made Hotels.com's list of cheapest Canadian cities in 2011, with rates averaging $145.

And if you want the full Titanic experience ? only with a happier ending ? consider one of Carnival Cruise Lines' new four- and five-day voyages from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. John, New Brunswick, on the Glory, launching in June; departures from New York will follow in the fall (from $73 per night).

Best time to visit: Hurricane season officially spans June through November, but since September and October are the highest-risk months, you can feel safe traveling here in June, when humidity is low and temperatures peak between 65 and 77 degrees.

Where to stay: The Halliburton Hotel occupies a trio of 19th-century town houses near Halifax's waterfront?(from $122). Each of its 29 rooms is decorated differently; some even have wood-burning fireplaces.

Price check: Cities on the Eastern Seaboard are the best jumping-off points for your Canadian journey. In June, nonstop flights to Halifax begin at $612 from New York (Continental and United), and $629 from Philadelphia and Boston (US Airways). West-coasters have to book one-stop tickets, like one from Portland that goes for $692 (Air Canada).

    Belize

Why in 2012: Belize tends to be overshadowed by its neighbors: Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica, which in 2010 saw twice the visitor arrivals that Belize did. Yet this English-speaking nation has plenty to recommend it, including a bounty of exotic birds, stunning Mayan ruins and the world's second-largest barrier reef. On top of all that, Belize is also one of the region's biggest bargains. In 2011, the dollar appreciated 1.3 percent against the native currency; as of September, the exchange rate was nearly two to one. The savings should last until December 2012, which marks the end of the 5,126-year era of the Maya calendar and the culmination of a year's worth of festivals and sporting events ? and a likely spike in hotel prices and crowds.

Best time to visit: High season is dry season in Belize, roughly February to April. (While the country is hot and humid year-round, northern areas stay much drier than their southern counterparts.) Arrive in late May to find the sweet spot for beach-ready weather, early-shoulder-season discounts and thinning crowds.

Where to stay: Avoid San Pedro, where hotel prices are up 6 percent from 2010, and head south to the less-touristy Placencia Peninsula, where crystal-clear lagoons and 16 miles of sandy beaches coexist with the world's first-ever jaguar preserve. The seaside Maya Beach Hotel?is owned by an expat couple (she's American, he's Australian) who set up guests with fishing trips, scuba dives, cave tours and massages. (from $89.)

Price check: In May, direct flights from Miami start at $444 (American); from Houston, $745 (Continental). For cheaper fares, grab a seat on a one-stop flight; from Los Angeles, fares begin at $523 (Continental).

    San Antonio

Why in 2012: America's seventh-largest city is best known for its 19th-century missions (remember the Alamo?), but San Antonio is staking a claim on the future with new construction: a massive expansion of San Antonio's popular River Walk?(pedestrian access free). As part of the $358.3 million River Improvements Project redevelopment plan, this network of paths along the San Antonio River nearly doubled in length in June, adding eight miles of walk-and-bike routes and a slew of shops and cafes. The latest phase of the project was perfectly timed with the introduction of the city's first bike-rental program, B-Cycle, which launched in early 2011 (bcycle.com, daily rental $10). Best of all, room rates are down 5 percent from last year ? the average four-star room goes for $100 per night ? and the city's S.A.V.E. (San Antonio Vacation Experience) program promotes additional hotel deals year-round (visitsanantonio.com).

Best time to visit: April promises prime weather ? the average high is 79 degrees and there's little rain ? but springtime also means massive crowds, who descend on San Antonio for events like Fiesta, a Tex-Mex-style Mardi Gras. For a quieter trip, try September. It's a bit rainier and hotter (expect highs in the 90s), but worth it for the extra elbow room.

Where to stay: The nearly two-year-old Hotel Havana, the brainchild of Texan tastemaker and hotelier Liz Lambert, is set in a revamped 1914 building and decorated with Turkish rugs and vintage Cuban artwork (from $115).

Price check: Direct flights are plentiful and affordable in September, when fares start at $314 from Phoenix (US Airways), $320 from New York (United), $268 from Denver (United) and $321 from Chicago (American).

    Poland

Why in 2012: With new airport terminals sprouting up from Warsaw to Gdansk, a hotel-construction boom that's drawing marquee brands like Hilton and Westin, and a growing economy (the Polish GDP has shot up 4 percent since last year), Poland is ready for its close-up. Its cameo will come in June, when the UEFA Euro 2012 soccer tournament descends on stadiums across the country (and Ukraine ? the two nations are cohosts) ? but you don't have to be a sports fan to reap the benefits. South Africa, which hosted the World Cup in 2010, saw post-game price drops as high as 20 percent when premium rates vanished, and the same trend is expected in Poland, where five-star hotels are already among the cheapest in the world (in Warsaw, they average $135 per night).

Best time to visit: The warmest weather, with averages in the low 70s, arrives from May to October ? and so do vacationers, who sweep in around July and August to hit the Baltic beaches. Book a trip around September, when the crowds and soccer tournaments will have disappeared, leaving tranquility and low prices in their wake.

Where to stay: Soon after opening in 1913, the opulent Polonia Palace was a hangout for celebrities, artists, and politicians (President Eisenhower stayed there in 1945). Nearly 100 years later, after undergoing a renovation, the spot?Warsaw's sole hotel to escape WWII unscathed?is prized for its clean, modern rooms and central location. (from $123.)

Price check: Winter nonstops can be had for as little as $628 from New York to Warsaw (LOT Air), but for just a bit more cash (and one connection), you can enjoy September's much milder weather. A recent search turned up one-stop flights from New York for $756 (Continental) and from Chicago for $528 (LOT Air), or for $1,010 from Los Angeles (Air New Zealand).

    Taipei

Why in 2012: The arrival in Taiwan of the first mainland Chinese tourists last June (not counting supervised tours) marked a turning point for this onetime Chinese territory ? a sign that a longtime political stalemate might finally be thawing. It also brought an influx of tourism revenue and a renewed interest in this Pacific island's assets. The cosmopolitan capital city has an emerging culinary scene (world-famous chef Jo?l Robuchon opened a Taipei restaurant in November 2009) and plenty of snazzy new construction, while the surrounding countryside offers lush hot springs, majestic mountains and golden-sand beaches. To cater to the new visitors, Taiwan's government launched the new TaiwanTourist Bus Travel Service, which runs cheap day trips to several island attractions, such as an excursion to Taiwan's alpine Sun Moon Lake that includes a cable-car ride, a boat tour, and electric-scooter rental (taiwantrip.com.tw, day trips from $11). And while a recent bump in U.S. visitors to Asia has caused hotel prices elsewhere on the continent to jump 4 percent ? rates in South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore have all spiked ? Taipei's rooms are 11 percent cheaper than they were in 2010, with an average rate of $144 per night.

Best time to visit: May through August are Taipei's wettest months, with rainfall averaging eight inches; summer is sweltering and humid. October and November are much more pleasant, with less than four inches of rainfall and average high temperatures in the mid-70s.

Where to stay: Every room in the Tango Taipei XinYi ? which sits near the world's second-tallest building, the nearly 1,700-foot Taipei 101 Tower ? has two 42-inch plasma TVs (one for the bedroom, one for the bathroom) and a Jacuzzi tub (tango-hotels.com, from $137).

Price check: At publication time, tickets to Taipei weren't available beyond October 2012 (when direct flights from San Francisco start at $1,145 on Taiwan's EVA Airways). But if 2011 prices are any indication, fall trips will come relatively cheap. This November, Malaysia Airlines offered nonstop fares from Los Angeles for $1,057 and one-stops from Chicago were going for $1,087 on Cathay Pacific.

    Kansas City

Why in 2012: Thanks to arts-centric developments both large-scale and grassroots, this Midwestern city is fast becoming a hotbed of high culture. In September, the $326 million Moshe Safdie?designed Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts opened to host the Kansas City Ballet, the Lyric Opera and the Kansas City Symphony, along with one-off performances of all stripes. The center's arrival has only helped to bolster the already-vibrant Crossroads Arts District ? a funky enclave of 70-plus galleries in renovated warehouses, interspersed with boutiques and restaurants ? that surrounds it. Thankfully, Kansas City's prices haven't caught up to its highbrow reputation. Both hotels and rental cars are cheaper than they were in 2010, with rooms going for about $137 per night (a 3 percent drop) and cars averaging $55 per day.

Best time to visit: September is technically high season here ? annual events like the Plaza Art Fair and the Barbecue Blaze Off are in full swing then ? but you'll be able to find good deals (and great weather) toward the end of the month. Skip July, when Kansas City is at its hottest and most crowded ? especially this year, when it'll host the MLB All-Star Game.

Where to stay: Opened in 2007, the Q bills itself as Kansas City's first green hotel. Eco-friendly touches are everywhere, from the fair-trade Guatemalan coffee in the lobby's cafe to the complimentary hybrid shuttle that chauffeurs guests around town. (from $139.)

Price check: September savings abound, with nonstop fares from Denver and Houston starting at $158 (US Airways) and $205 (American), respectively. For $243, you can fly direct from Chicago on American, and a straight shot from New York will run you $289 (Continental and United).

    Athens

Why in 2012: Greece's economy is faltering ? it's in the clutches of a massive debt crisis and on the brink of bankruptcy ? but travel deals are going strong, especially in the country's capital. According to the 2011 Mercer Cost of Living Survey (which ranks living expenses across cities by measuring prices of staples like food, transport and entertainment), Athens is the world's 53rd most expensive city ? down 13 spots from 2010. While hotel prices fell 4 percent across Greece from 2010 (an average room now goes for $150 per night), in Athens rates sunk 15 percent to $125. Despite the recession, the city is beefing up infrastructure with Greece's biggest-ever subway project, an expansion of the Athens Metro (single rides from $1.89). New subway lines and stations ? some stocked with ancient artifacts excavated during construction ? will make roaming the city simple, and a full-day pass only costs $5.40.

Best time to visit: April and May are clear winners, with pleasant temperatures (highs range from 68 to 77 degrees), low humidity, and little rain. Just steer clear of April 15, 2012, when Easter festivities will likely inspire price hikes and a run on accommodations.

Where to stay: With its soaring ceilings, rooftop restaurant and stunning Acropolis views, it's not surprising that the boutique 10-room Magna Grecia ? housed in a refurbished, 19th-century building in central Athens ? was a two-time World Luxury Hotel Awards finalist (from $107).

Price check: Airfare to Greece is, understandably, more unpredictable now than ever, and it's imperative to pay attention to which days you travel. On April 16,?a nonstop Athens-bound flight from New York costs $1,166 (Turkish Airlines), but four days later the price shoots up by $139 ? on the same airline! Stopover flights are your best bet if you're coming from Boston ($1,285) or Washington, D.C. ($1,271, both on Delta) or Miami ($1,363 on American Airlines).
